Autrefois, elles accueillaient essentiellement la progéniture de la haute société britannique et se caractérisaient par une discipline très stricte, un confort inexistant, et la fréquence des brimades. Aujourd'hui encore, les "boarding schools" prônent des valeurs traditionnelles et sont fréquentées par des enfants issus de milieux aisés du fait de leur coût élevé. Ces établissements ont pourtant dû s'adapter à la société moderne: ils sont maintenant très souvent mixtes et acceptent des pensionnaires d'origine sociale un peu plus variée qu'autrefois. -
