1908-1958

   Nacido en Alemania, Kurt Neumann va a los Estados Unidos para dirigir versiones en aleman, a co mienzos del sonoro. Mas tarde, emprendera una carrera como director que solo se valoro en su justa medida en los anos 50, que son los ultimos de su actividad. La mosca (The Fly, 1958) es, con toda seguridad, la mas famosa de sus peliculas y una de las cumbres del genero fantastico. Antes ya nos habia ofrecido Neumann cuatro entregas de Tarzan que no estan nada mal, entre 1945 y 1953, las tres primeras con Johnny Weissmuller y la ultima con Lex Barker. Como director de westerns tambien ofrece mas de lo que a primera vista parece, especialmente en esa extrana y sugestiva pelicula que es Hacha de guerra.

   Procedente del teatro, llega a Hollywood en 1935 contratado por Warner Bros. En 1937 pasa a MGM, donde empieza como ayudante de direccion. Muere en 1951, a los 41 anos, despues de una carrera relativamente breve y no demasiado brillante. Fue el director favorito del comico Red Skelton, para el que dirigio, sin acreditar, A Southern Yankee. En un par de ocasiones trabajo con la pareja comica formada por Bud Abbott y Lou Costello. Lust for Gold, su ultima pelicula, una rareza digna de ser vista por su peculiar utilizacion de pasado y presente, precede en el tiempo a la breve temporada en que se dedico a tareas de produccion para Columbia.

   Entra en el mundo del cine a comienzos de los anos 20, abriendo de par en par la puerta de la actuacion, labor en la que le acreditaba su experiencia previa sobre los escenarios. En 1924 se estrena como realizador, tarea en la que persiste hasta 1967. Entre 1933 y 1935 es el director casi unico de la modesta productora Powerty Row. En 1935 pasa a Metro- Goldwyn-Mayer, donde permanecera hasta 1962. Dirige, en los mas de cuarenta anos de profesion, cerca de 200 peliculas, de las que unas 120 son sonoras. Aborda todos los generos, si bien se encuentra mas comodo dentro de la accion y la aventura, donde obtiene sus mayores reconocimientos, como en Ivanhoe (1953) y en Los caballeros del rey Arturo (Knights of the Round Table, 1954), por ejemplo, ademas de tres entregas del Tarzan protagonizado por Johnny Weissmuller. Entre otras muchas cosas, es uno de los pioneros en el uso de formatos anchos. Su actividad en el western, sin embargo, es reducida; se limita a un punado de peliculas a comienzos del sonoro, incluido un serial, a cuatro filmes en los anos 40 protagonizados por Wallace Beery, y a alguna que otra esporadica aparicion en el genero, al que no contribuye especialmente, ni en cantidad ni en calidad.
