L’ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) est une technologie pouvant transmettre tout type d’information, y compris le son et la vidéo, par l’acheminement indépendant de l’information fragmentée en de multiples paquets et reconstituée à l’arrivée pour recomposer l’information initiale, le tout dans un délai infime. Le câble en fibres optiques permet le transfert de données numériques (texte, son et vidéo) à très haut débit et sur de longues distances. La technologie utilisée est l’ATM (asynchronous transfer mode). Un débit pouvant aller jusqu’à 100 Mbps (mégabits par seconde) permet des services tels que la télévision haute définition, la vidéo à la demande, les mondes virtuels 3D, la visioconférence et le P2P (peer-to-peer)
