Юношу приговаривают к казни на электрическом стуле.► С 30-х гг. «Columbia» выпустила длинную серию фильмов (иногда с очень скромным бюджетом) о подростковой преступности. Этот фильм, 1-й продюсерский опыт Богарта, где амбиций больше, чем вложенных средств, полностью вписывается в эти рамки. Николасу Рею удается превратить его в личное высказывание даже при том, что фильм не обладает ни оригинальностью его дебютной картины для «RKO» ( Они живут по ночам, They Live by Night), ни зрелостью более поздних работ. Нарисованный режиссером портрет подростка, чувствующего жажду насилия и поддающегося ей, цепляет уже сам по себе, а заодно служит первым наброском персонажей Бунтаря без причины, Rebel Without a Cause. Николас Рей категорически отказывается сочувствовать насилию на экране, рискуя показаться немного приторным - особенно по сравнению с нуарами тех лет. Но развязка (обвиняемый оказывается виновен) от этого приобретает только больше трагической силы, особенно благодаря эффекту неожиданности. Это кульминация обличения общества, хотя образ адвоката, сыгранного Богартом, не лишен некоторой неловкой (но искренней) риторичности. Сквозь эту неловкость проглядывает подлинная главная мысль фильма. Рей не предлагает какого-либо точного решения и не собирается мстить. Его цель - подчеркнуть неспособность взрослых (к которым он причисляет и себя) спасти подростков, брошенных с головой в губительную среду, созданную старшими поколениями.
