El mejor pertegueiru que yo he conocido era un paisano de Bandujo, hermosa aldea de mis montañas, se nomaba Xulián, ya güéi nel díe ya nun ñacen homes comu aquel paixanu. (Se llamaba Julián, y hoy en día ya no nacen hombres como aquel paisano). Aquel astur, con más de sesenta años de edad, trepaba con la misma ligereza de la ardilla, hasta la cume (alto) del más corpulento de los castaños, sacudiéndolos de tal forma, que no los dañaba en sus ramas, cosa del todo importante, y no dejaba en ellos ni un solo arizo. Qué naturalezas la de los antiguos astures, sanos, fuertes, nobles, aguerridos en todo momento y amantes siempre de Nuestra Embrujadora Tierrina, enamorados de su Llingüa y de sus costumbres, donde en sus indómitos espíritus no tenía cabida ni la hipocresía, ni la maldad, ni tanta asquerosa y despreciable lacra, como hoy se alberga en nuestros haceres y pensares. El sueldo de un pertegueiru eran dos tercias de castañas por día de trabajo, bien de cuerra (d'esbítcha) o biruelas (de las que se desprenden solas del arizo), según se hubiese contratado, la comida y alojamiento, si tenía que trasladarse a otra aldea que no fuese la suya.
