    Gli acronimi (abbreviazioni composte da lettere iniziali), come NATO ( North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Organizzazione del Trattato Nord-Atlantico) e UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, Organizzazione delle Nazioni Unite per l'Educazione, la Scienza e la Cultura) si scrivono senza punti. Tendenzialmente, gli acronimi vanno pronunciati come una parola unica, ma alcuni si pronunciano anche lettera per lettera. Per esempio VAT ( value-added tax, imposta sul valore aggiunto) si pronuncia sia V-A-T sia come parola che fa rima con bat; UFO ( unidentified flying object, oggetto volante non identificato) si pronuncia sia U-F-O sia come una parola normale inglese (► anche abbreviation).

    In termini generali l'articolo a viene usato davanti alle consonanti e an davanti alle vocali: a book, a pen; a member of parliament; an elephant; an opportunity. Attenzione: con consonante e vocale ci si riferisce in questo caso a suoni, non a lettere. Alcune parole, come European, iniziano con lo stesso suono della parola you, mentre la parola one si pronuncia come se iniziasse per w-; in entrambi i casi si usa a invece di an: a European, a one man band. Allo stesso modo, si dice an MA ( Master of Arts, laurea di secondo grado), non a MA, perché inizia con il suono em (► abbreviation, acronym, per indicazioni sulla pronuncia delle sigle inglesi).

Nell'uso britannico il punto si tralascia quando l'abbreviazione finisce con l'ultima lettera della parola nella sua forma estesa, non abbreviata: ad esempio Mr (da Mister), Dr (da Doctor), St (da Street o Saint). Al contrario, il punto si conserva quando l'ultima lettera dell'abbreviazione non è l'ultima lettera della parola nella sua forma estesa: ad esempio Capt. (da Captain), Rev. (da Reverend), anon. (da anonymous). La parola abbreviata viene pronunciata per esteso: “Mister” (Mr) “Doctor” (Dr) (► acronym).
