    [ˊsæntǝˊfeɪ] г. Санта-Фе, столица штата Нью-Мексико (ок. 60 тыс. жителей). Местные индейцы пуэбло [Pueblo Indians], которые построили посёлок на том месте, где сейчас находится Санта-Фе, задолго до прихода европейцев, называли его «местом, где танцует Солнце». В подземных ритуальных помещениях, которые до сих пор встречаются у пуэбло и называются «кива» [kiva], небольшое отверстие — место выхода на поверхность — носит название «сипапи» [sipapi]. Ныне капитолий штата Нью-Мексико, по замыслу его создателей, необычайной архитектурой должен напоминать «киву». Испанцы заложили город Санта-Фе [La Villa Real de la Santa Fe de San Francisco] («королевский город святого семейства Святого Франциска») в 1609, десятилетиями раньше, чем отцы-пилигримы высадились у Плимутской скалы, быстро окрестили индейцев и занялись поиском золота. Период «фронтира» в жизни Санта-Фе начался в 1821 с открытием дороги на Санта-Фе [*Santa Fe Trail], которая занимает такое большое место в мифологии американского Запада. Дорога сделала Санта-Фе естественным объектом для захвата американской армией в её продвижении на Запад с целью осуществления «предначертания судьбы» [Manifest Destiny]. К началу XX в.
