4 ἕνος
Grammatical information: adj.Meaning: `old' as opppsed to`new', only in expressions about fruits and officials of the past year, also of the last dayof the preceding month, indicating the new period (Hes.; ἔνη the first day of the month, with Ion. psilosis?); in the last sense mostly ἕνη καὶ νέα (sc. σελήνη; Att. since Solon).Etymology: The general IE word for `old', *sénos, is still found in most branches, as opposed to `new': Gr. ἕνος, Arm. hin, Skt. sána-, Lith. sẽnas, Celt., e. g. OIr. sen; here also OWNo. sina f. `withered grass of last year' (cf. ἕνος βλαστός etc.). Some lnguages use it also as opposed to `young', so e.g. Celtic and Lithuanian, but also Germ., e. g. Goth. sineigs `πρεσβύτης', and also Iranian, Av. hana- `old, grey'; in Skt. sána- is not so used. this meaning became dominant in Italic, Lat. senex, Osc. senateís ` senātūs'. In the East *sénos in this meaning was replaced by the expressive group of von γέρων (s. v.). - Cf. 5 θάρσος
Grammatical information: n.Meaning: `confidence, courage, audacity' (Il.)Other forms: Att. θάρρος (partly a reshaping of hom. θάρσος etc. after Leumann Hom. Wörter 115), Aeol. θέρσος n.Compounds: Compp., e. g. εὑ-θαρσής `of good courage' (A.), θερσι-επής `talking courageously' (B.; on the 1. member Schwyzer 448).Derivatives: θαρσαλέος, - ρρ- `with confidence, courageous' (Il.; on the formation Chantraine Formation 253f.), Θερσίτης PN (Hom. etc.; Redard Les noms grecs en - της 196; cf Risch Gnomon 23, 160 and Bloch Mus. Helv. 12, 59), θαρσήεις `courageous' (Call., Nonn.; innovation, s. Schwyzer 527); denomin. verb θαρσέω, - ρρ-, aor. θαρσῆσαι `be courageous' (Il.; cf. Schwyzer 724, Chantraine Gramm. hom. 1, 349; hardly with Leumann l. c. from εὑθαρσέω with θαρρητικός (Arist.).Etymology: Beside θάρσος, θέρσος we have θρασύς `audacious, courageous, bold' (since Il.), often as 1. member, e. g. θρασυκάρδιος `with audacious heart' (Il.), Rhod. Θαρσύ-βιος, Ther. Θhαρ(ρ)ύ-μαqhος (cf. Bechtel KZ 51, 145; more forms in Schwyzer 284; on the short names are based Θρασύλος also Leumann Glotta 32, 216 and 223 n. 2); from it θρασύτης `boldness' (IA), Θρασώ surn. of Athena (Lyc.), denomin. verb θρασύνω, θαρσύνω, - ρρ- `encourage' (Il.) with θάρσυνος `with confidence' (Il.; best postverbal; cf. Schwyzer 491 and diff. interpretations); comp. θρασίων (Alcm.), θρασύτερος, - ύτατος (Att.); Seiler Steigerungsformen 55f. - Cf. also ἀτάσθαλος. With θρασύς agrees Skt. dhr̥sú- (gramm.); liter. is dhr̥ṣṇú- `bold' after dhr̥ṣ-ṇ-ó-ti `be audacious'. Full grade θέρσος, for which sec. θάρσος, θράσος through influence of θρασύς, has however in Skt. no agreement (one finds dhárṣa-; would be Gr. *θόρσος). On the other hand Greek replaced the primary verbs by the newly formed θαρσέω, θαρσύνω: Skt. dhr̥ṣ-ṇ-ó-ti, dhárṣati with the perf. da-dhárṣa = Germ., e. g. Goth. ga-dars `τολμῶ' (wold be Gr. *τέ-θορσ-α), Lith. (with infixed nasal) drį̃sti `dare' (\< IE *dhr̥-n-s-), with analog. present dręsù with the nouns drąsà `boldness', OLith. drįsùs (after drį̃sti. Very doubtful Toch. A tsraṣi, B tsir `strong' (Poucha Archiv Orientální 2, 326, ZDMG 93, 206); s. Pedersen Zur toch. Sprachgeschichte 19. - Further forms in Pok. 259, Mayrhofer Wb. 2, 112f., Fraenkel Lit. et. Wb. s. drąsùs, Vasmer Russ. et. 6 θιβρός
Grammatical information: adj.Meaning: meaning uncertain, only in Alexandrian poets;Other forms: also θιμβρός Nic. Th. 35 v.l.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: adjunct of Κύπρις (Call. Fr. 267), Σεμίραμις (Euph. 81), of ὤεα χελύνης (Nic. Al. 555), ὀφίων κῆρ (`snake-poison', Nic. Th. 35). The ancients gave groping explanations: `hot, soft etc.', vgl. H.: θιβρόν τρυφερόν, καλόν, σεμνόν, ἁπαλόν; θιβρήν φιλόκοσμον, καλλυντικήν.... καὶ παρὰ μεν Νικάνδρῳ την ἔμπυρον καὶ καυστικήν, τινες δε χαλεπήν. - And θίρρον τὸ τρυφερόν (Theognost.). So uncertain. Acc. to Ehrlich Sprachgeschichte 33 to φοῖβος, IE *g̯ʷ ʰigʷ- ro-, comparing Slov. žigra `tinder'. - The prenasalized form points to a Pre-Greek form.Page in Frisk: 1,674Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > θιβρός

Schwyzer 676), aor. θλάσ(σ)αι (Il.), pass. θλασθῆναι, fut. θλάσω (Hp.), perf. τέθλασμαι (Alex., Theoc.),Derivatives: θλάσις `crushing' (Arist.), θλάσμα `bruising, bruise' (Arist.), θλαστός (Com.); θλάστης `crusher' = ἐμβρυοθλάστης (medic.), θλαστικός `crushing' (Arist.); θλαδίας m. `eunuch' (LXX, Ph.) with θλαδιάω H. = φλαδιάω; from *θλάδος, *θλαδεῖν, cf. φλαδεῖν.Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: No certain connection. 8 ἰόμωροι
Grammatical information: pl.Meaning: adjunct of the Άργεῖοι (Δ 242, Ξ 479).Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: The explanation of the scholl. as `famous for their arrows' fails for the shortness of the ἰ- (on the contents also Bechtel Lex. s. v.). The added epithet ἀπειλάων ἀκόρητοι suggests (?) ἰά, ἰή `crying'; so does the expression βοην ἀγαθός and ὑλακό-μωροι ( κύνες ξ 29, π 4). Thus Ehrlich Sprachgeschichte 48, Bechtel Lex. s. v., Theander Eranos 15, 99ff. a. n. Cf. also Leumann Hom. Wörter 37 and 272 n. 18. On the 2. member s. ἐγχεσί-μωρος.Page in Frisk: 1,729Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἰόμωροι

9 ἰοχέαιρα
Grammatical information: adj..Meaning: attribute of Artemis, also used as substantive (Hom.; Pi. P. 2, 9 [with shortening of the ἰ-], poet. inscr.), also of the φαρέτρα (AP 6, 9); also name of the viper (Nic. Fr. 33).Etymology: Since antiquity mostly explained as `shaking out arrows, arrow-shootress, from ἰός `arrow' and χέω, cf. δούρατ' ἔχευαν Ε 618; through learned play by Nic. referring to ἰός `poison'. The 2. member was shaped after χίμαιρα, γέραιρα a. o. (Schwyzer 452 a. 475, Chantraine Formation 104); as it never existed as an independent word, it cannot be seen whether it is derived from an ρ-stem *χέϜ-αρ (Benveniste Origines 27) or from an ν-stem ( πίειρα: πίων, πέπειρα: πέπων). - However, Heubeck Beitr. z. Namenforschung 7, 275ff. derived it (with Pisani; objections by Belardi Doxa 3, 208, Fraenkel Ling. Posn. 4, 96) from ἰός and χείρ as `who has the arrow(s) in her hand'; this is supported by Skt. formations, e. g. íṣu-hasta- `who holds an arrow in the hand', śūla-hasta- `... a lance in...'. On the formal aspects s. on χείρ (s. v.). - Not with Ehrlich Sprachgeschichte 48 as `crying (a) hunting cry' from ἰά `cry' and a verb `call' (Skt. hávate); cf. Kretschmer Glotta 4, 350. Also R. Schmitt, Dicht. u. Dichterspr. 177ff.Page in Frisk: 1,731-732Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἰοχέαιρα

10 ἰσχίον
Grammatical information: n.Meaning: `hip-joint, haunches' (Il.).Compounds: As 2. member e. g. in ἐξ-ίσχιος `standing out from the h.' (Hp.), εὑ-ίσχιος `with beautiful h.' (hell. poetry).Derivatives: Dimin. ἰσχάριον (Hero); ἰσχιακός `belonging to the h.' (Thphr.); ἰσχιάς, - άδος f. (sc. νόσος) `pain in the h.' (Hp.) with ἰσχιαδικός (medic.), as plant-name = λευκάκανθα (Dsc., as remedy against ἰσχιάς, Strömberg Theophrastea 194); ἰσχίᾱσις = ἰσχιάς (medic.; as if from *ἰσχιάω, Schwyzer 505 and 732); denomin. verb ἰσχιάζω ( ἰσχιάδδειν H.; Lac.) `bend the h.' (Prokop., Suid., Phot., H.; uncertain Gal. 18 [1] 786).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: No etym. - If ἴσχι ὀσφύς H. is correct, the formation agrees with ἄλφι, μέλι and Skt. names for parts of he body like sákthi `thigh-bone', ásthi `bone' [but these prob. have -i \< -H]. Against identification of ἴσχι and sákthi (Meringer Beitr. 3, Schulze Kl. Schr. 710 n. 8) Sommer Sprachgeschichte und Wortbedeutung 426 n. 2. (Doubtful Grošelj Razprave 2, 10 to OHG hlanca `hip': OE hlanc `schlank, mager' connecting ἰσχίον to ἰσχνός; but hlanca starts from `to bend' (NHG lenken), and the formation remains unclear. - Fur. 393 connects ἰξῡ́ς, which seems quite possible: metathesis in the latter; one might assume *ikty-, cf. on ἴξαλ-ος; also Pre-Greek had several words in -ι, which is very rare in inherited Greek (Beekes, Pre-Greek, 3.1b.)Page in Frisk: 1,741Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἰσχίον

11 κραναός
Grammatical information: adj.Meaning: `hard, raw, rocky' (Il.), also of Athens and the Athenians (Hdt., Ar.); called Κραναὰ πόλις or Κρανααί (Ar.) resp. Κραναοί (Hdt.); Κραναός a mythical king of Athens.Compounds: κραναή-πεδος `with rocky bottom' said of Delos (h. Ap. 72, - η- metr. conditioned; Zumbach Neuerungen 18).Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: With the form cf. κερα(Ϝ)ός, τανα(Ϝ)ός; so prop. *κραναϜός; no connection known. The traditional connection with words for `heart' (s. κράτος) means nothing, as long as the formation has not been explained. Diff. Johansson BB 18, 26f. and Ehrlich Sprachgeschichte 21f.
