Первоначальный текст, принятый 4 июля 1776, был подписан "по указанию и от имени Конгресса" ["by order and in behalf of Congress"] одним Дж. Хэнкоком [ Hancock, John]. После того, как делегация Нью-Йорка, не голосовавшая 4 июля, объявила 19 июля о своей поддержке Декларации, ее текст был переписан на пергаменте и торжественно подписан 2 августа 50 членами Конгресса. Подписи оставшихся шести членов были собраны между 2 августа и 19 ноября 1776. Последним поставил свою подпись делегат от Делавэра Т. Маккин в 1781 -
