Первый сборник "Колосс" ["Collossus"] вышел в 1960, но только после посмертной публикации сборника "Ариэль" ["Ariel"] в 1965 к ней пришло признание как поэтессы, отразившей настроения своего поколения. Частично автобиографический роман "Под стеклянным колпаком" ["The Bell Jar"] (1963) о судьбах молодежи в период маккартизма [ McCarthy Era], представляющий собой исповедь надломленной молодой женщины, был опубликован под псевдонимом. После самоубийства Плат вышли еще два ее сборника: "Через океан" ["Crossing the Water"] (1971), "Зимние деревья" ["Winter Trees"] (1971).
