Students can then stay on for another year and, if their marks are good enough, obtain a qualifizierter Hauptschulabschluss, known colloquially as a Quali, which gives them a better chance in the job market and also entitles them to attend a Fachoberschule. In Austria a Hauptschule covers school years five to eight and also offers opportunities for young people who wish to go on to higher education. In Switzerland compulsory schooling is provided by a Volksschule.
