    1909-1993
       Nacido en Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, educado en la Columbia University, en 1928 pasa varios meses como periodista en Berlin. En 1929, con la ayuda de su hermano mayor, Herman, que dirigia el departamento de guiones en Paramount, es contratado como guionista. Primero se dedico a escribir intertitulos para poder proyectar las peliculas, ya sonoras, en salas de cine que todavia no estuvieran adaptadas al sistema; en 1934, ya consolidado como guionista, pasa a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer y despues a Fox, donde se convierte en director, con frecuencia de sus propios guiones, en 1946. Su filmografia es modelica, con obras de verdadera importancia cinematografica como Carta a tres esposas (A Letter to Three Wives, 1948), Eva al desnudo (All About Eve, 1950), La condesa descalza (The Barefoot Contessa, 1954) o Mujeres en Venecia (The Honey Pot, 1967). Es autor, tambien, de la extrana, intimista y desmesurada Cleopatra (1961-63), y de un estimulante western lleno de ideas vivas, de desverguenza y de sabiduria cinematografica.

A sus peliculas no les faltaron medios materiales, que no aprovecho en exceso.

       De origen canadiense, sobradamente conocido por sus devaneos con el triste Comite de Actividades Antinorteamericanas de McCarthy y Nixon, este hijo de inmigrantes ucranianos empieza como montador en los primeros anos del cine sonoro. Ningun genero le fue indiferente, y firmo, casi en cada uno de ellos, obras consistentes. La etapa mas fructifera de la primera parte de su carrera fue la correspondiente a sus peliculas para RKO, en particular Hitler’s Children (1943) y las magnificas muestras de cine negro Historia de un detective (Murder, My Sweet, 1944), basada en una de las novelas de Raymond Chandler, y Encrucijada de odios (Crossfire, 1947), intenso drama de intolerancia racial, basado en una novela de Richard Brooks, que posteriormente seria director de cine. Lanza rota es un remake, en clave de western, de Odio entre hermanos (House of Strangers, Joseph L. Mankiewicz, 1949), con Spen cer Tracy en el lugar de Edward G. Robinson. No se suele incluir, y se aportan razones al respecto, a El arbol de la vida como perteneciente al genero. Yo si lo hago, aunque solo sea porque el contexto historico en el que se desarrolla este drama sentimental puede considerarse dentro de las coordenadas que delimitan el western.

       Victima de la lista negra elaborada por el siniestro Comite de Actividades Antinorteamericanas, Vor haus, que ya habia ganado cierto prestigio como di rector en Inglaterra durante los anos 30, se vio obligado a trabajar en los anos 50 como ayudante de di reccion en peliculas importantes rodadas en Europa por directores norteamericanos, como Vacaciones en Roma (Roman Holi day, William Wyler, 1953), La condesa descalza (The Barefoot Contessa, Joseph L. Mankiewicz, 1954) o Historia de una monja (The Nun’s Story, Fred Zinnemann, 1959), siempre con el seudonimo de Piero Mussetta, que podia evitar incomodas situaciones. Volvio de nuevo a vivir en Inglaterra, donde murio. Lo mejor que se dijo de su labor como director corrio a cargo de David Lean, quien reconocio la influencia que sobre el habia ejercido Vorhaus.
