French region located in north east France, bordering Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Champagne-Ardenne, Alsace, and Franche Comté. The administrative capital of Lorraine is Metz; but the urban area of Nancy is the region's largest connurbation. Lorraine was formerly a major industrial region, with large steelworks in the Moselle valley, and along the German border in the area of Forbach. The region is made up of four departments, Meurthe-et-Moselle, Meuse, Moselle and Vosges. Like their neighbours in Alsace, the people of the north of the region, along the German border, have a regional language of Germanic origin. Moselle Franconian is closely related to the Luxembourgish Franconian spoken in Luxembourg. For further information see Lorraine regional guide.Dictionnaire Français-Anglais.
