•• Всех нас учили, что русское слово провокационный и английское provocative – не одно и то же. Это верно в том смысле, что английское слово богаче по своему значению (русское провокационный вполне однозначно). Однако это не значит, что эти слова не могут быть эквивалентами. Английское слово часто употребляется в том же значении, что и русское, хотя не все словари это фиксируют. Скажем, Oxford American Dictionary дает два значения: arousing or likely to arouse anger or interest or sexual desire; deliberately annoying. Однако в следующем предложении очевидно, что речь идет о провокации в принятом у нас понимании (подстрекательство кого-нибудь к таким действиям, которые могут повлечь за собой тяжелые для него последствия, согласно словарю Ожегова): Secretary of State Madeleine Albright... struck a tough balance in Israel last week, demanding that Palestinians crack down on terrorism and that Israelis halt “provocative” acts that jeopardize peace talks (Washington Post). Таким образом, в переводе русских предложений, где говорится о «провокационных действиях», вполне подойдет provocative. Но, скажем, словосочетание в провокационных целях лучше перевести for purposes of provocation. Обратите внимание, что английское provocation может быть как исчисляемым, так и неисчисляемым (как в данном случае) существительным. Русское провокатор в историческом значении переводится французским заимствованием agent provocateur
, но если не имеется в виду «должность», то лучше обойтись без этого, например: Он невольно оказался провокатором. – Without wanting it, he provoked (something/somebody).
•• Теперь о случаях употребления слова provocative, когда перевод провокационный явно не годится. Under Tina Brown’s editorship The New Yorker became the most provocative magazine in the country (Fortune). Здесь provocative – синоним таких слов, как thought-provoking и stimulating (thought-provoking или stimulating speech, newspaper, remark, etc.) Что в данном случае «провоцируется» – интерес, мысль, дискуссия – остается «за кадром», но домыслить это не трудно по контексту. Иногда можно обойтись и без этого, прибегнув к таким словам, как содержательный, яркий, дискуссионный, пользующийся громкой славой (не забудем совет: английское прилагательное в переводе совсем не обязательно должно оставаться прилагательным). Вот еще один пример, где значение слова provocative довольно загадочно: Keezer’s provocative, concerto-like arrangements... suggest a kind of jazz version of Baroque counterpoint (Time). Подсказкой для переводчика могут быть следующие слова: His arrangements can be even more interesting than his solos. Итак, provocative здесь, скорее всего, своеобразные, а, может быть, действительно загадочные (аранжировки).
