νέποδες, οἱ, so heißen bei Hom. Od. 4, 404 die Robben, φῶκαι νέποδες καλῆς Ἁλοσύδνης, was schon die Alten auf drei verschiedene Arten erklären, indem sie es – 1) von νή u. πούς ableiten, wie Apion, also = ἄποδες, die Fußlosen; aber sonst erscheint νη nie in νε verkürzt. – 2) von νέω (νήχομαι), wie Apoll. L. H. u. E. G. p. 405, 49, = νηξίποδες, Schwimmfüßige, mit Floßsüßen, Schol. αἱ διὰ τοῦ νήχεσϑαι τὴν πορείαν ποιούμεναι. Dieser Deutung folgend nennen sp. D. alle Fische u. Wasserthiere übh. νέποδες, Satyr. 1 (VI, 11), Opp. C. 384 u. Nic. Al. 468. 485. Bei H. h. Apoll. 78 ἕκαστά τε φὖλα νεπούδων ist diese Form sehr auffallend, u. die Lesart wahrscheinlich verderbt. – 3) Eust. endlich sagt, daß, κατὰ γλῶττάν τινα, νέποδες = τέκνα seien, die Kinder, junge Brut. Diese in der homerischen Stelle vielleicht unwahrscheinliche Deutung paßt aber entschieden auf viele Stellen der alexandrinischen Dichter, die das Wort wie das lat. nepotes brauchen, und wahrscheinlich dies mit dem griechischen νέος verbanden, wie das auch erwähnte νεόποδες zeigt, vgl. Ap. Rh. 4, 1745, Theocr. 17, 25, Cleon. in E. M. p. 389, 28. – Spätere Gramm. hoben wieder das πούς mehr hervor u. meinten, wie Orus, E. M. p. 601, 29, daß die Kinder so hießen, weil sie die Füße noch nicht gebrauchen könnten, u. kamen so auf die erste Erkl. zurück. – Der sing. νέπους steht Callim. frg. 77; νέπος u. acc. νέποδα, für »Fisch«, steht in einem Epigr. bei Schäf. zu Greg. Cor. p. 682.
