Grammatical information: m.Meaning: `mackerel' (Epich., Ar., Arist. a. o.).Derivatives: Dimin. σκομβρίδες ἰχθύες H.; also Arist. HA 543 b 5 (v. l. σκορπίδες). Besides, apparently denominative, σκομβρίσαι γογγύσαι. καὶ παιδιᾶς ἀσελγοῦς εἶδος; also σκομβρίζειν as expl. of ῥαθαπυγίζειν H.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: Unexplained. Because of the verb σκομβρίζειν, which seems toexpress a sound, Strömberg Fischnamen 73 f. wants to consider also σκόμβρος as as an expression of a sound and to connect it with κόμβησαν (s. κόμβα) and κόμπος; more than uncertain. Russ. skomlítь `cry slowly' etc. (Prellwitz s.v.) remains far; s. Vasmer s.v. -- Lat. LW [loanword] scomber, Russ. LW [loanword] skúmbrija (from NGr. σκουμβρί, pl. - ιά) etc.; s. Thompson Fishes and Vasmer s. v. -- The word may well be Pre-Greek.; cf. Furnée 124.Page in Frisk: 2,737Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > σκόμβρος
