2 ἀμύς
ἀμύς, - ύδοςGrammatical information: f.Other forms: Also ἐμύς (Arist. HA 588a8, H.)Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Considered contamination of ἐμύς `id.' und ἀμία `tunny' by Strömberg Fischnamen 81; improb. Perhaps in πήλαμυς (s.v.)? No doubt a substr. word; cf. the form with ἐ-. Fur. 347.Page in Frisk: 1,97Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἀμύς

4 ἐμύς
ἐμύς, - ύδοςGrammatical information: f.Meaning: `sweet water-tortoise' (Arist.) (in LSJ only in Suppl.)Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: S. Chantraine Formation 126 and 347; origin unknown. Sommer Lautstud. 100 derives it from ἐμέω because the animal, when breathing out below the water-level lets go continuously air-bubbles. But - ud- is not an IE suffix, so prob. a Pre-Greek word; s. Chantr. Form. 348 πηλαμύς "sans doute prèhellénique," χλαμύς "arrangement d'un mot emprunté.") Cf. Beekes Pre-Greek suff. - υδ-. It has apparently escaped researchers that there are two forms; this prob. points to Pre-Greek origin (Fur. 346f.), though I cannot explain the variation ἀ-\/ἐ-. There is no support for the suggestion that πηλαμύς is compounded with it (which would make no difference for the interpretation). - So not to Celtic with Stokes BB 21, 132.Page in Frisk: 1,508Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἐμύς

5 εὔληρα
Grammatical information: n. pl.Meaning: `rein' (Ψ 481, Q. S.);Dialectal forms: Dor. αὔληρα (Epich. 178, H.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Unclear εὐληρωσίων πληγῶν H. (from *εὐλήρωσις to *εὐληρόομαι, - όω?). - One assumed *ἐ-Ϝληρ-ο-, *ἀ-Ϝληρ-ο- (Schwyzer 224), with prothesis to Lat. lōrum `rein', Arm. lar `strick, rope, band', from IE *u̯lēr-, *u̯lōr-, *u̯lǝr-, r-derivation from a primary verb for `turn, wind, twine' in 2. εἰλέω. S. W.-Hofmann s. lōrum, Pok. 1143. S. also λῶμα. - Given the variation, which cannot be explained as IE, prob. Pre-Greek; for ἀ-\/ἐ- cf. ἀμύς \/ ἐμύς and Furnée 347ff.Page in Frisk: 1,588Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > εὔληρα

6 πηλαμύς
πηλαμύς, - ύδοςGrammatical information: f.Meaning: `(young) tuna' (S. Fr. 503, Phryn. Com., Arist.).Other forms: also παλαμίς (Cyran.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Prob. from πηλός `mud' after its abode, s. Strömberg Fischnamen 79ff. (also 128ff.) with extensive argumentation; as 2. member one assumes ἀμύς = χελώνη λιμναία (s. v.). -- Otherwise (e.g. Chantraine Form. 348) usu. taken as foreign word. -- The word is no doubt Pre-Greek.Page in Frisk: 2,527-528Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > πηλαμύς
