róhiṇīf. (f. of rohita, « red», below;
alsoᅠ f. of rohin above) a red cow orᅠ < later> any cow (represented as a daughter of Surabhi andᅠ mother of cattle, esp. of Kāma-dhenu, « cow of plenty» ;
in the Veda, Rohiṇī may perhaps alsoᅠ mean « a red mare») RV. etc. etc.;
N. of the ninth Nakshatra orᅠ lunar asterism andᅠ of the lunar day belonging to it (in this sense it may optionally have the accent on the last syllable;
it is personified as a daughter of Daksha, andᅠ as the favourite wife of the Moon, called « the Red one» from the colour of the star Aldebaran orᅠ principal star in the constellation which contains 5 stars, prob. α, β, γ, δ, ε, Tauri,
andᅠ is figured by a wheeled vehicle orᅠ sometimes by a temple orᅠ fish;
it is exceptionally pl., andᅠ in TS. and TBr. there are 2 Nakshatras of this name;
it may alsoᅠ be used as an adj. andᅠ mean « born under the Nakshatra Rohiṇī» Pāṇ. 4-3, 34 Vārtt. 1);
