यम a. [यम्-घञ्]1 Twin, twinborn.-2 Coupled.-मः 1 Restraining, controlling, curbing; यमो राजा धार्मिकाणां मान्धातः परमेश्वरः Mb.12.91.42.-2 Control, restraint.-3 Self control.-4 Any great moral or religious duty or observance (opp. नियम); तप्तं यमेन नियमेन तपो$मुनैव N.13.16; यमनियमकृशीकृतस्थिराङ्गः Ki.1. 1. (यम and नियम are thus distinguished:-- शरीरसाधनापेक्षं नित्यं यत् कर्म तद् यमः । नियमस्तु स यत् कर्म नित्यमागन्तुसाधनम् ॥ Ak.2.49; See Malli. on Śi.13.23 and Ki.1.1 also. 25 अगुण _aguṇa
अगुण a.1 Destitute of attributes (referring to God).-2 Having no good qualities, worthless; अगुणो$ यमकोशः M.3, गुणयुक्तो दरिद्रो$पि नेश्वरैरगुणैः समः ॥ Mk.4. 22.-णः [न. त.] A fault, defect, demerit, vice; तद्वः सर्वं प्रवक्ष्यामि प्रसवे च गुणागुणान् Ms.3.22; गुणागुणज्ञ knowing merit and demerit; लोभश्चेदगुणेन किम् Bh.2.55; अगुणेषु तस्य धियमस्तवतः Ki.6.21. vices;-णम् 1 Absolution (मोक्ष, कैवल्य); धर्मादयः किमगुणेन च काङ्क्षितेन Bhāg. 7.6.25.-2 Supreme Being (परब्रह्म).-Comp. _वादिन् a. fault-finding, censorious, not appreciating merits.-शील a. of a worthless character. -
26 अद्वय _advaya
अद्वय a. [नास्ति द्वयं यस्य]1 Not two.-2 Without a second, unique; sole; अद्वयं ब्रह्म Ved. Sūtra.-यः [अद्वयं विज्ञानाभेदः पदार्थानाम् अस्त्यस्य वादकत्वेन अस्त्यर्थे अच्] N. of Buddha-यम् [न. त.] Non-duality, unity, identity; especially of Brahman and the universe, or of spirit and matter; the highest truth.-Comp. -आनन्दः = अद्वैतानन्दः q. v.-वादिन् (= अद्वैत˚) one who propounds the identity of spirit and matter or of Brahman +and the universe (सर्वमेव वस्तु चित्स्वरूपं नान्यदतो द्वितीयमस्ति इति यः प्रतिपादयति) 2. 27 अधम _adhama
1अधम a. 'one who does not blow.' cf. अधमः कुत्सिते न्यूने अधःस्थाध्मानयोरपि Nm.2अधम a. [अव्-अम; अवतेः अमः, वस्य पक्षे धः Uṇ.5.54.] The lowest, vilest, meanest; very bad, or low, or vile (in quality, worth, position &c.) (opp. उत्तम); अधम- मध्यमोत्तमाः or उत्तमाधममध्यमाः &c.; शस्त्रावपाते गर्भस्य पातने- चोत्तमो दमः । उत्तमो वाधमो वापि पुरुषस्त्रीप्रमापणे ॥ Y.2.277. oft. at the end of comp.; नर˚, द्विज˚; चाण्डालश्चाधमो नृणाम् Ms.1.12 lowest in position; अधम˚ the vilest of the vile, the meanest wretch.-मः 1 An unblushing sensu- alist (भयदयालज्जाशून्यः कामक्रीडाविषये कर्तव्याकर्तव्याविचारकः Śabda K.); वापीं स्नातुमितो गतासि न पुनस्तस्याधमस्यान्तिकम् K. P.1.-2 A sort of योग or conjunction of planets (नृणां वित्तज्ञानादिषु अधमत्वसूचकः रविचन्द्रयोः स्थितिविशेषरूपो योगभेदः Tv.)-मा A bad mistress (हितकारिप्रियतमे$हितका- रिणी). [cf. (-रः) (कर्म˚) the meanest conduct.-ऋणः, -ऋणिकः [अधमः अधमावस्थां प्राप्तः ऋणेन, ततः ठन्] a debtor (opp. उत्तमर्णः) (lit. reduced to a low position by his incurring debt). मन्ये$धमर्णप्रतिमेन भर्त्रे प्रत्यर्पितो$भूदशितो धनौघः । Śiva B.23.7.-भृतः, -भृतकः [कर्म.] a porter, groom, a servant of the lowest class, one of the 3 kinds of servants; उत्तमस्त्वायुधीयोत्र मघ्यमस्तु कृषीवलः । अधमो भार- वाही स्यादित्येवं विविधो भृतः ॥ -
28 अनायुष्य _anāyuṣya
अनायुष्य a. [आयुषे न हितम् न. त.] Not giving long life, fatal to long life (such as excessive food, sexual union &c.); अनारोग्यमनायुष्यमस्वर्ग्यं चातिभोजनम् Ms.2.57 नहीदृश- मनायुष्यं लोके किञ्चन विद्यते । यादृशं पुरुषस्येह परदारोपसेवनम् ॥ 4.134. -
29 अनारोग्य _anārōgya
अनारोग्य a. [नास्ति आरोग्यं यस्मात् न. ब.] Unwholesome, not conducive to good health, fatal to health; अनायुष्य- मनारोग्यमस्वर्ग्यं चातिभोजनम् Ms.2.57.-ग्यम् Sickness, indisposition; ˚कर unhealthy, unwholesome. -
30 अनुजीव् _anujīv
अनुजीव् 1 P.1 To depend upon for subsistence, hang on, live by or upon (something); ये च त्वामनुजीवन्ति नाहं तेषां न ते मम Rām.; स तु तस्याः पाणिग्राहकमनुजीविष्यति Dk. 122 hang or depend on, live (submissively) under, live as a subordinate to.-2 To see without envy; यां तां श्रियमसूयामः पुरा दृष्ट्वा युधिष्ठिरे । अद्य तामनुजीवामः Mb.-3 To live for any one.-4 To follow or imitate in living; प्रेमदत्तवदनानिलः पिबन्नन्वजीवदमरालकेश्वरौ R.19.15 v. l. अनुनय a. [नी-अच्] Kind, conciliatory, pacifying (as words). तुल्यदुःखो$ब्रवीद्भ्राता लक्ष्मणो$नुनयं वचः Rām.4.27.33.-यः 1 Conciliation, propitiation, pacification (of anger), friendly persuasion; कथं नु शक्यो$नुनयो महर्षेर्विश्राणना- च्चान्यपयस्विनीनाम् R.2.54; कथं वा तेषामनुनयः कृतः H.4; प्रकृति- वक्रः स कस्यानुनयं प्रितगृह्णाति Ś.4.-2 Courtesy, civility, courteous or polite behaviour, modesty, modest or respectful deportment, conciliatory act (such as salu- tation); showing respect (to a guest, deity &c.); विविधैरनुतप्यन्ते दयितानुनयैर्मनस्विन्यः V.3.5; दयितजनः˚ 2. 22; वाक्यैः स्निग्धैरनुनयो भवेदर्थस्य साधनम् S.
