טְפָאv. טְפֵי.

טִפָּא, טִפָּה,v. sub. טִיפּ׳.

טְפֵי, טְפָאI (cmp. טָפַח II) 1) to grow faint, to die out, be extinguished. Targ. 1 Sam. 3:3. Targ. Job 18:5, sq.; a. e.Y.Sabb.I, 3b bot. אילין בעיין דיִטְפֵיוכ׳ they (the children) desire that the lamp grow dim (so that they need not study, and therefore will not snuff it). Lev. R. s. 9 אשכחא בוצינא טָפֵי she found the lamp gone out; (Y.Sot.I, 16d bot. מִיטְּפֵי Ithpe); a. e. 2) to put out, extinguish. Targ. Cant. 8:7. Targ. 2 Sam. 21:17; a. e.Y.Yoma VIII, 45b בעי מִטְפְתָה wanted to put it out; Y.Ned.IV, 38d מיטפייה (read: מִיטְפִינָהּ). Ib. אפי׳ר׳ אימי יִטְפֵי (or Af.) even R. l. would have been permitted to extinguish the fire on the Sabbath. Af. אַטְפֵי same. Tanḥ. Vayigg. 5 נורא דתמר כלתך אנא מַטְפֵי I will put out the fire intended for Tamar (I will curb thy passion; Yalk. Gen. 150 אנן מנהרין we shall light for thee). Ithpe. אִיתְטְפֵי, אִיטְּפֵי to be extinguished, grow dim. Y.Sabb.VI, 8c bot. (read:) איטפי בוצינא אמרה לה לא איתטפי אמרי לא מיטפי בוצינאוכ׳ is the light out? Said she, it is not out. Upon which they said (this means) the light of Israel is not extinguished (R. A. is not dead). Y.Sot.I, 16d bot., v. supra. Y. Ḥag.II, 77c top ואִיטַּפְיַית and the fire over the grave was extinguished (v. דְּמַךְ).

טְפֵי, טְפָאII (= h. צָפָה, v. טוּף) 1) to float. Targ. Y. Ex. 26:28 והוה טָפֵי (not והות). 2) to flood. Y.Snh.X, 29a bot. ובעי מִטְפָא עלמא and wanted to inundate the world. Af. אַטְפֵי (denom. of טִיפָּא) to drop. Targ. Job 15:8 some ed. (v. טְפַף II).

טְפֵי

טְפֵי, טְפָאIII (v. טָפַף I) 1) to join, add, increase. Taan.24a אי טָפוּ להוכ׳ when they put on too much or too little. Ab. Zar.9a ונִיטְפֵי עלייהווכ׳ and let him add thereto twenty years. Yoma 35a אי בציר מהני וט׳ אהני if he makes the ones less in value and adds to the value of the others; a. fr.Part. טָפֵי, f. טַפְיָא more. Sabb.19a אי ט׳ if it is more in measure (than before washing).Ab. Zar.9b דמתניתא ט׳וכ׳ the calculation of the Boraitha is three years more.Adv. טְפֵי more. Gitt.44a, a. e., v. חַד II.R. טְפַחPa. טַפֵּחַ ch. same, 1) to close carefully. B. Kam.23a לא ט׳ באפיה (Ms. H. טפא, v. טְפֵי IV) he did not carefully close (the stable) before him. 2) to slap, strike with hand, stamp with foot. Targ. 2 Kings 19:24; Is. 37:25. Targ. Ez. 21:17; 19; a. fr.Targ. Jon. 4:8 ט׳ שמשאוכ׳ the sun beat upon B. Kam.32b ט׳ ליה רבא בסנדליה Raba struck him upon his (R. Shimis) sandal (to silence him); M. Kat. 25a; B. Bath.22a; a. e. 3) to clap hands. Y.Snh.II, beg.19d; Y.Hor.III, beg.47a שרי ט׳ בחדאוכ׳ he made the motion of clapping with one hand; ובחדא טַפְחִין do people clap with one hand?; a. e. 4) to strike, forge. Targ. Ps. 141:5; Targ.
