    יָסַת (cmp. אֲסִי a. עָשָׂה) to do habitually.Denom. וֶסֶת, הֶיסֵּת. Hif. הִסִּית, הֵסִית (b. h., by way of syncope, forms resembling Kal of סית, as יְסִיתְךָ = יֵיסִי׳, וַיָּסֶת = וַיַּסֶּת to cause to do, stir up, instigate. Sot.35a (expl. ויהס … אל, Num. 13:30) הִסִּיתָן בדברים (he quieted them, because) he (apparently) instigated them (against Moses). Ḥag.5a עבד שמַסִּיתִין עליו רבו ונִיסַּתוכ׳ Ms. M. (ed. שרבו מסיתין לו) a slave against whom they incite his master and he (the master) is influenced by the instigation (ed.: a slave whose master, when they incite him, yields), what help is there for him?B. Bath.16a, v. supra. Sifré Deut. 89 מצוה ביד הנ׳וכ׳ he who was to be incited to idolatry must first lay his hand on Y. Sot.10b דבר זה מ׳ בידינו מאבותינווכ׳ we hold a tradition from our fathers that Ḥull.63b עוף טהור נאכל במ׳ as for eating clean birds we rely on tradition (there being no rules for distinguishing them in the Biblical law).Esp. the traditional Scriptural text without vowels, contrad. to מקרא the traditional vocalization, v. אֵם. Y.Meg.IV, 74d bot. (ref. to Neh. 8:8) ‘they explained the reading, זה המ׳ this means the traditional text; Bab. ib. 3a אלו חמסורות (some eds. מסורת; v. Rabb. D. S. a. l.); Ned.37b המסורות. Ab. III, 13 מ׳ סייג לתורה the tradition is the fence for (preserving the integrity of) the Torah.
