Furmée also refers (276) to an *ὄστρυγξ in ὀστρύγγιον ἡ ἐπιφυλλὶς `racemus' (`stalk of a bunch of berries') (Gloss.; not in LSJ). With this agree remarkably Skt. pulakāh m. pl. `the hairs (of the body) stand on end (das Sträuben der Körperhaare) ( pula- `id.' Lex.) and pulastí(n)-'with sparse hair (schlichthaarig)', which also presuppose a * pula-. From Iran. one further adduces Kurd. pūr `hair of the head', from Celt. MIr. ulcha `beard', ul-fota `with long beard'. Lidén Streitberg-Festgabe 226f. Older lit. in Bq and WP. 2, 84 (Pok. 850), also in W.-Hofmann s. 2. pĭlus `hair' (not to this). Doubts in Mayrhofer s. pulakāḥ. Untenable on the morphology Specht Ursprung 209 a. 217. -- Againt "hylläic" origin (to φύλλον etc.; Barić) Mayer Glotta 32, 75. -- All rather uncertain. (Chantraine Form. 398ff., Schwyzer 498); further analysis unknown. As basis could have functioned a noun *ῥαθαμός ( οὑλαμός, ποταμός a.o.); beside it apparently *ῥαθμός in ῥαθμίζεσθαι (prob. through syncope, a is often found in Pre-Greek). As βαθμός: βαίνω also *ῥαθμός: ῥαίνω? Through crosses or enlargements ῥα-θαίνω (: ῥαίνω), ῥαθάσσω (: σταλάσσω). Further s. ῥαίνω. -- Diff. Bechtel Lex. s.v.
