5 πλημῡ̆ρίς
πλημῡ̆ρίς, - ίδοςGrammatical information: f.Meaning: `high tide of the sea, flood' (ι 486, Ion. poet., hell.).Derivatives: πλημύ̄ρ-ω `to have flood, to overflow, to submerge' (Archil., B., Call.) with πλήμῡρα f. = πλημυρίς (hell.); byform - έω `id.' (Hp., Plu.; like κύρ-ω: - έω etc., Schwyzer 721) with - ίη, - ία f. (Aret., sch.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: As ἁλμ-ῠρίς is built from ἅλμη, πλημ-ῠρίς goes back on πλήμ-η (fist hell., but πλήσμη already Hes.; cf. also πλήμνη). From there (or from *πλημυρός like ἁλμυρός?) πλημύ̄ρω with further derivv. From πλημύ̄ρω a.o. the vowellength was also introduced in πλημῡρίς. Bechtel Lex.s. v. -- The geminate μμ, usual in mss., is introduced from πλημμελής and other compp. (Schwyzer 280). The accentuation πλήμυρις, - ιν (sch. as alternative, EM; cf. Wackernagel Gött. Nachr. 1914, 107 [Kl. Schr. 2, 1164] n. 1) can come from the opposite ἄμπωτις (and von πλήμῡρα?). -- The usual connection with μύρομαι is to be rejected. -- The suffix - υρ- is Pre-Greek, and so may be the whole word.Page in Frisk: 2,560-561Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > πλημῡ̆ρίς

πλημμυρίς, ἡ, die Fluth des Meeres; πλημ. ἐκ πόντοιο, die vom hohen Meere gegen das Gestade strömende Fluth, Od. 9, 486, wie τῆς ϑαλάσσης Her. 8, 129; übh. von jeder überfließenden Menge, σταγόνες ἄφρακτοι δυςχίμου πλημμυρίδος, Aesch. Ch. 184; auch πλημ. ὀφϑαλμότεγκτος, Eur. Alc. 182; auch die Fluth als Ggstz der Ebbe, ἄμπωτις, wie πλήμμυρα, παλίνορσος, Ap. Rh. 2, 576; im plur. S. Emp. adv. phys. 1, 79. – Bei Hippocr. auch vom Ueberströmen, Uebermaaße der Flüssigkeit u. der Säfte im menschlichen Körper. – Die Alten leiteten das Wort von πλήν u. μύρω ab u. schreiben deswegen μμ; Andere ziehen πλημυρίς u. sonst auch in den verwandten Wörtern die Schreibung mit einem μ vor, indem sie es nicht als Zusammensetzung betrachten, sondern unmittelbar von πλήμη, πλήϑω ableiten, vgl. Buttm. auss. gr. Gramm. I p. 39. – In der homerischen Stelle ist υ kurz, bei den Attikern aber immer lang; bei den sp. Ep. bald kurz, bald lang, vgl. Brunck zu Ap. Rh. 4, 1269, doch scheint auch hier, wie in allen verwandten Wörtern, die Länge vorzuherrschen.]

20 μύρομαι
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `melt into tears, bewail' (Il.), later (Lyc., A. R.) also of a river `fleet' and `drip of blood'.Origin: ONOM [onomatopoia, and other elementary formations]Etymology: If orig. of the murmuring sound, as onomatop. to μορμύρω (s.v.). The connection with Lat. muria f. `pickle', Lith. mùr-stu, mùr-ti `become wet' etc. (WP. 2, 252 doubting after H. Petersson, Pok. 742) is not to be preferred. -- Here prob. also ἁλι-μυρήεις, - μυρής (on the form Schwyzer 528), ep. adjunct of ποταμός, πέτρη etc., though the exact meaning of this conventional epithet remains uncertain ('flowing into the sea?, around which the sea rustles' etc.?; not convincing Bechtel Lex. s.v.). But μυρίος, μύριοι (prop. "flowing on like the sea"?) must be kept far like πλήμῡρα, πλημυρίς in spite of Schwyzer 593.Page in Frisk: 2,273Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > μύρομαι
