Since Fick 1, 83 a. 482 identified with Skt. pínākam n. `staff, stick', Slav., e.g. CSl. pьnь, Russ. penь m. `tree-stump, bobbin, stem'; on the meaning cf. Lat. caudex (-o-) `tree-trunk, bobbin, wooden table, book'. The suffixal agreement between Greek and Skt.
