PN Penestae (cf. also the Apenestae in Apulia), Fraenkel KZ 43, 193 n. 1 with Fick a.o.); cf. Bechtel, Dial. 1, 242. By the Ancients (cf. D. H. 2, 9) connected with πένης, πένομαι; on itself possible. Improb.
