48 ἄμοτον
Grammatical information: adv.Other forms: From there the adj. ἄμοτος (Theoc.).Etymology: Uncertain, as the exact meaning is unknown. Seiler, KZ 75, 1957, 1943f, assumes zero grade of μεν- + the zero grade of ἐν, as in ἐμμεμαώς; but zero grade of ἐν has never been shown with certainty. Forssman, O-o-pe-ro-si FS Risch, 1986, 329-339 explains *n̥-mn̥-tom memn̥wōs as `Unerstrebtes\/-bares erstrebend', with Greek and Skr. parallels. Tempting, but for the oldest formula, with Eris (twice, verse end), the proposed meaning does not fit: it is slearly `incessantly, indefatigable; and this meaning is possible with * mh₃-, from μῶλος, μόλις, OHG muojan, muodi `tired', Goth. af-mauiÞs `id.' (\< *mō-etos), Russ. maju.Page in Frisk: 1,95Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἄμοτον

49 μέλεος
Grammatical information: adj.Meaning: `idle, vain, futile, unhappy' (Il.).Compounds: Rarely as 1. member, e.g. μελεο-παθής `having suffered wretchedly' (A.). As to the accent agreeing to the secondary material- and animal-adj. like χρύσεος, λίθεος, βόεος (Chantraine Form. 50 f.), μέλεος belongs because of its meaning rather to the primary oxytona ἐτεός, κενεός, στερεός; so an instance of Aeolic barytonesis?Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: Like ἐτεός for ἐτεϜός, μέλεος can stand for *μέλεϜος (Bechtel Lex. s. v.; cf. on μῶλος). Further unclear; quite dobtful combinations in Prellwitz, Bq, WP. 2, 291, Pok. 719f.; s. also W.-Hofmann s. 3. malus, Fraenkel Lit. et. Wb. s. mẽlas 1.; cf. also on βλάσφημος.Page in Frisk: 2,200Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > μέλεος

50 μογέω
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `toil, be distressed, suffer' (Il.)Other forms: ptc. perf. μεμογηώς (Nic.)Derivatives: μόγος m. `toil, trouble, distress' (Δ 27, rare). As 1. member in μογοσ-τόκος adjunct of the helpster(s) of birth Eileithyia (Il.) and Artemis (Theoc.), also of ὠδῖνες (Lyc.), of the Trojan horse (Tryph. Ep.), of ὥρα a.o. (Nonn.); meaning uncertain, but not with Bechtel Lex. (after Brugmann Grundr.1 1, 173; not in the 2. impr.) = `causing pain' with μογοσ- as acc. pl. from *μόγονς; a μογο-τ. was metr. impossible (Chantraine Gramm. hom. 1, 95). From μόγος prob. μογερός `laborious, distressful' (trag.). -- Adv. μόγις `with toil, hardly' (Il.); old nom. sg. "who toils"? (Solmsen Wortforsch. 169; cf. also Schwyzer 620). -- PN Μογέᾱ m. (Boeot.; Schwyzer 560).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: On itself μογέω can of course be a denominative from μόγος; the rarity of the substantive makes it however more probable, that μογέω as old intensive (cf. Schwyzer 719 f.) gave μόγος as backformation. -- No certain cognates. Solmsen KZ 29, 85f. compared a Balt. adj. for `heavy (of weight) etc.', Lith. smagùs also `strong, powerful (of blows)', Latv. smag(r)s; the anlaut. σμ- is also found in σμογερόν σκληρόν, ἐπίβουλον, μοχθηρόν H. (cf. on σμυγερός). After Fraenkel (s. Wb. s. smagùs) however the Balt. adj. belongs rather to Lith. smagiù, smõgti `scourge, beat, throw (s.thing heavy)'. Also Lat. mōlēs `heavy mass', also `exertion, toil' remains far, s. W.-Hofmann s.v. and on μῶλος. -- Cf. μόχθος and μοχλός. - Fur. 140, 363 connects μόχθος, μοχλός, σμογερος, σμυγερός and considers the group, prob. correctly, as Pre-Greek.Page in Frisk: 2,247-248Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > μογέω

51 μόλις
Grammatical information: adv.Meaning: `hardly' (trag., Att.).Other forms: (Adv. = μόγις.)Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: Etymologically ambiguous: if "with difficulty" to μῶλος `*trouble', `fight' (with - ο- after μόγις?) or as "hesitating" to μέλλω `to be about to do, hesitate etc.' or as "(only) with power" to μάλα `very'? Solmsen Wortforsch. 169ff., also WP. 2, 291 a. 301 (Pok. 730(?) a. 746), W.-Hofmann s. mōlēs.Page in Frisk: 2,250Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > μόλις

52 μῶλυς
μῶλυς, - υοςGrammatical information: adj.Meaning: `enervated (also mentally); dull, feeble, weak' (S. Fr. 963. Nic., Demetr. Lac.);Other forms: also μῶλυξ (cod. - δ-; cf. v. Blumenthal Hesychst. 42f.) ἀπαίδευτος, μώλυκα τὸν ἀπαίδευτον. Ζακύνθιοι H.; μωλυρόν νωθρόν, βραδύ H.Derivatives: μωλύω, - ύνω, - ύνομαι, aor. pass. μωλυ(ν)θῆναι, perf. med. μεμώλυσμαι, rarely with ἀπο-, κατα-, δια, `boil imperfectly, scald, simmer', med.-pass. `become powerless, fade away', esp. of wounds `fail to come to a head' (Hp., Arist.); μωλύεται γηράσκει, μεμωλυσμένη παρειμένη H. With the verbal nouns μώλ-υσις (- υνσις) f. `spoil' (opposite ἕψησις; Arist., Thphr.), - υτης ἐπέων meaning uncertain (Timo).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: With μωλύω (to which μωλύ-ν-ω; cf. Schwyzer 728) cf. κωλύω; the much more rare μῶλυς may be a backformation. With a velar μῶλυξ like κόρυξ νεανίσκος H. (s. κόρη); μωλυ-ρός like ἐχυρός, καπυρός a.o. (hardly with Benveniste Origines 36 to μωλύνω with ρ: ν -change), if not dissimilated from - υλός (cf. Leumann Glotta 32, 223 A. 2 = Kl. Schr. 249 n. 3). -- Because of the not very clear meaning and the unclear formation etymologically hard to asses. By Fick 23, 189, Bq a.o. connected with μέλεος (acc. to Bechtel Lex, 224f. and Specht KZ 59, 93 also ἀμβλύς); rejected by WP. 2, 285. After Prellwitz BB 26, 310 (accepted by WP. 2, 301 and Pok. 746) however to μῶλος. Diff. again H. Petersson Et. Miszellen 18: μωλύω to μολούω (s. μολεύω) as κωλύω to κολούω. -- Everything hypothetic. - The suffix - υκ- looks Pre-Greek.Page in Frisk: 2,Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > μῶλυς
