3 μέρμις
μέρμις, -ῑθοςGrammatical information: f.Meaning: `band, string' (κ 23, D. S. 3, 21), dat. pl. - θαις (Agatharch. 47); acc. sg. - θον (H.), nom. - θος (Zonar.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Formation like ἕλμις ( μέρμινθα v. l. D. S. l. c. like ἕλμινθος etc.), ὄρνις γέλγις a. o. (Schwyzer 510, Chantraine 366). Further analysis unknown; a suffixal - μι- (with θ-enlargement) is possible; broken reduplication may be considered. A primary verb mer- `twist, bind' (WP. 2, 272 a. Pok. 733) is nowhere attested; cognates have been supposed in μηρύω as well as in βρόχος and μάραθ(ρ)ον (s. vv.), both without further confirmation. For foreign (Pre-Greek) origin Chantraine l.c., Deroy Glotta 35, 191ff. Fur. 289 compares μήρινθος, σμήρινθος `string, thread' and further σμῆριγξ `hair', σμήριγγες πλεκταί, σειραί, βόστρυχοι H.Page in Frisk: 2,211Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > μέρμις

2, 22).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: In the sense of ' πλεκταί, σειραί' σμῆριγξ agrees with μήρινθος (s. v.); the, as it seems, more usual meaning `breast v. t.' is however rather far off. It is therefore doubtful, whether the words, as was assumed (Chantraine Mél. Glotz [Paris 1932] 165, Schwyzer 498, v. Windekens Le Pelasgique 121), were originally connected; the supposedly ocasional(?) meaning `rope, string' may have been caused through the similarity with μήρινθος, μηρύω. The meaning ' ἐν τοῖς μηροῖς... τρίχες' will be an attempt to connect μῆριγξ with μηρός. -- No solution. Fur. 289 n. 78 separates the word = ἄκανθα from the others. Clearly a Pre-Greek word.Page in Frisk: 2,230Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > μῆριγξ

5 μηρυκ-άζω
Grammatical information: v.Compounds: Also with ἀνα-, ἀπο-, (LXX, Ph., Plu. a. o.; μαρ- Ath. 9, 390f, Jul. Gal. 314d), - ίζω (Gal.).Derivatives: μηρυκισμός m. (LXX), ἀνα-μηρύκη-σις f. (Aristeas) `ruminating'; backformation μήρυξ m. name of a supposedly ruminating fish, `Scarus cretensis' (Arist.), s. Strömberg Fischnamen 53.Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: The three verbs μηρυκ-άομαι, - άζω, - ίζω can come either from a denominative from a noun with κ-suffix or be an expressive (iterative) enlargement of a primary *μηρύκ-ω, which may have itself an enlarging - κ- ( ἐρύ-κ-ω with ἐρυκ-άνω, - ανάω: ἐρύομαι or ἐρύω; Schwyyzer 702). So we come back to a *μηρύω, - ύομαι `wrap, wind', which can be easily combined(?) with the winding and turning mouth- and muscle-movements of a ruminator; cf. Grošelj Razprave 2, 44. -- Not with Machek Ling. Posn. 5, 67 f. to Slav. rumigati, Lat. rūmi-gāre with metathesis.Page in Frisk: 2,231Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > μηρυκ-άζω
