πότερος (ΟΣ, ἕτερος), ion. κότερος, – 1) welcher von beiden? bei Hom. nur einmal, in indirecter Frage, Τυδείδην δ' οὐκ ἂν γνοίης, ποτέροισι μετείη, Il. 5, 85; πότερος περὶ τῶν χρηστῶν σιτίων ἐπαΐει, ὁ ἰατρὸς ἢ ὁ ὀψοποιός, Plat. Gorg. 464 d, vgl. Crat. 403 c Gorg. 521 a; öfter auch in indirecter Frage, σκόπει, πρὸς ποτέρους διαλέγει, Rep. VI, 527 e; Folgde. – Bes. häufig ist πότερον im ersten Gliede einer Doppelfrage, wie das lat. utrum, ob, πότερον ἄρα – ἤ, Pind. P. 11, 22; τίνες κατῆρξαν, πότερον Ἕλληνες, μάχης, ἢ παῖς ἐμός; Aesch. Pers. 343, u. öfter; Soph., Eur., Ar. u. in Prosa. Eben so oft auch im plur., πότερα δικαστὴν ἢ δικηφόρον λέγεις; Aesch. Ch. 118; Suppl. 331 u. öfter, Soph., Eur. u. Ar., wie in Prosa, sowohl in directer als indirecter Frage; vgl. noch Xen. Hell. 3, 5, 22; selten in einfacher Frage, wie πότερα δὴ κερτομῶν λέγεις τάδε; Soph. Phil. 1219, vgl. O. C. 334, wo das zweite Frageglied aus dem Zusammenhange zu ergänzen ist; Aesch. Pers. 235; Anaxandrid. bei Ath. IV, 166, d; so auch Plat. Soph. 228 a Polit. 284 d; Xen. Cyr. 1, 3, 15. – 2) indefin. Einervonbeiden, τί οὖν λέγει πότερος ὑμῶν; Plat. Lach. 181 d; ὅ φησι τούτων πεπονϑέναι πότερον, Soph. 259 d; τούτων πότερα γενέσϑαι ἢ ἀμφότερα ὡς ἄρα ἐστὶν ἀδύνατον, Rep. VI, 499 c. Nach Phot. lex. müßte in dieser Bdtg ποτερός geschrieben werden.
