    Origin: IE [Indo-European] [1135] *h₁-u̯e-u̯kʷ-om `I said'
Etymology: The Skt. aorist á-vocam `I spoke', from *e-u̯e-ukʷ̯-om, shows PGr. *ἔ-Ϝε-υπ-ον, from where through dissimilation ἔ(Ϝ)ειπον; on an uncertain trace of the digamma in a text of Homer s. Kretschmer Άντίδωρον 190ff. Further s. ἔπος. - Details in Schwyzer 745. On the meaning, use and inflexion Fournier Les verbes "dire" 3ff., 99f., 227ff.

  • 7 εἶπον

εἶπον (root ϝεπ, cf. voco), ἔειπον, iter. εἴπεσκεν, subj. εἴπωμι, εἴπῃσθα, aor. 1 εἶπα, 2 pl. εἴπατε: speak, say; strictly of an utterance with regard to its tenor and ethical expression rather than to the subject-matter (cf. ἔπος); hence the word may signify ‘command’ with foll. inf., εἰπεῖν τε γυναιξὶν | κληῖσαι μεγάροιο θύρᾶς, Od. 21.235; with nearer indication of the feeling, εὐχομενος δ' ἄρα εἶπεν, Od. 7.330; ὀχθήσᾶς δ ἄρα εἶπε, Il. 18.5; εἶπε δ ἄρα κλαίουσα, Il. 19.286; freq. w. obj., ἔπος, μῦθον, ἀγγελίην, etc.; so w. acc. of person named, οὐδ' ἢν Ἀγαμεμνονα εἴπῃς, ‘pronounce the name of,’ ‘name,’ Il. 1.90 ; ἔσται μὰν ὅτ' ἂν αὖτε φίλην γλαυκώπιδα εἴπῃ, i. e. when I shall hear him call me by this name, Il. 8.373, Od. 19.334.
