αὐθέντης, - ουGrammatical information: m.Meaning: `author, perpetrator', also `murderer' (Hdt.).Etymology: The forms αὐτο-έντης (S.) and συνέντης συνεργός H. point to *ἕντης, the full grade of the root in ἁνύω `realize, complete', combined with αὐτός. The root is aniṭ from forms where the laryngeal was lost before vowel, Rikov, Orpheus 4 (1994) 63 - 66. The meaning `murderer' hardly as a euphemism (nor through association with θείνω, s.
