(aus *ṇdh-lā, woraus *enfla, infula, zu *nedh-, binden; vgl. nodus), eine bald breit um den Kopf gelegte, bald turbanartig gewundene, weiße u. scharlachrote Binde aus Wolle, eine Wollbinde, die vermittels der vitta um die Stirn befestigt wurde, so daß die Enden der vitta zu beiden Seiten herabhingen, als Kennzeichen religiöser Weihe u. Unverletzlichkeit der gewöhnliche Kopfschmuck der Priester u. Vestalinnen, Cic. u.a.: in der spät. Kaiserzt. auch der Magistrate u. Kaiser, Spart. u. spät. ICt.: ebenso Schutzflehender u. Friedensgesandter, Caes., Liv. u.a.: als Zeichen heiliger Bestimmung u. erhaltener Weihe auch den Opfertieren um den Kopf gewunden, Verg., Liv. u.a.: u. an den Türpfosten der Tempel u. heiligen Gebäude (s.
