Тот факт, что news (вести, новости) приходят к нам со всех частей света (north, east, west, south), дал жизнь вполне объяснимой, но тем не менее ошибочной версии, что здесь находится ключ к происхождению этого слова. Раньше слово news писалось как newes. На самом деле, news — это форма множественного числа от слова new, и значение его совпадает со значением французского слова nouvelles (новые вещи). Несмотря на то, что news (новости) — это существительное множественного числа, грамматически оно употребляется в единственном числе: the news is good. Однако эти изменения произошли относительно недавно. Ещё сто лет назад слово news употреблялось как прилагательное во множественном числе: the news are good.
