    Linen fabrics for kitchen use for which the flax fibre is best suitable because no lint remains on the glasses or dishes after drying. Generally woven without colour but some cloths have narrow stripings and others have the words " Glass Cloth " woven in the fabric. A standard cloth is made 52 ends and 60 picks per inch, 35's lea warp and weft. When colour is used a doubled cotton yam is found to be most suitable. The weaves may be plain, 2 & 2 twill, basket or small matt, or huckaback. The cotton imitations are woven from heavy yams such as 10's to 18's warp and weft and about 52 ends and 40 picks per inch.

    A woollen or worsted cloth, 2 & 2 twill or matt weave. Both warp and weft are coloured, such as 2 dark, 2 light ends, for, say, 24 threads, then 4 dark, 4 light, for another 24 threads. The weft pattern is the same as the warp. The term indicates a style of design rather than a quality and numerous makes are common both in worsteds and woollens.

    A double or compound cloth used for vestings, mantles, etc. The figuring is developed in geometrical forms in a variety of weaves. The whole of the warp, both face and back, is controlled by the jacquard. Usually matelasse has two face, one back, in both warp and weft. A standard quality of the cotton style is made 80 face ends per inch of 2/60's cotton, 40 back ends 2/40's cotton, and 80 face, 40 back picks of 2/60's cotton weft.

    Also known as Lustre Orleans. It is a plain weave cloth with fine cotton warp and worsted weft. It is very closely woven and used for dress purposes. A typical cloth is made 60 ends and 140 picks per inch, 40's/56's Egyptian warp. Botany weft. This cloth was first made in 1856 by Mr. Barratt, who produced the cloth as "Summer Cloth" at the request of an American customer. He produced a plain weave cloth, diagonal twill, three-shaft twill and a crepe.

  • 117 Perching

    A process for raising a nap on the back of heavy cotton fabrics such as moleskins, swansdown, etc. In the wool trade this term refers to the examination of fabrics in the open width, in a good light. The cloth is drawn over a "perch" or long roller fixed near to a window when all faults are shown up. The faults are repaired and imperfections made good by picking, hurling and mending. The perching is done before finishing. Picking consists in removing from the face of the cloth all hairs, kemps, straws, etc. Burling is removing from the back of the cloth all slubs, straws, etc., drawing out thick threads of warp and weft, opening the knots, and pushing loose ends and curls on to the back so that the face is clear of all irregularities. Mending is the inserting of yarn in places where threads of warp or weft are missing from the cloth.

    Dress fabrics made from cotton or silk with checks of satin weave on a plain ground. The cloth is bleached, dyed or printed. Usually made in light weights. A standard cloth is made 39/40-in. finished with 62 reed, 56 picks per inch, 50's ground warp and weft and 2/100's satin stripe and checking. The satin warp stripes are crammed in the reed, and the weft stripes are also crammed.
