Пищевая, текстильная, кожевенно-обувная, химическая и др. промышленность. Метрополитен. Университеты. Музеи: изящных искусств и колониального искусства. Основан испанцами в 1567, с 1770 столица генерал-капитанства Венесуэла. С 1936 проложены современные магистрали, созданы ансамбли общественных и жилых зданий (архитектор К. Р. Вильянуэва и др.). Был сильно разрушен землетрясениями 1812 и 1900. -
