Глаголу запрещать соответствуют английские forbid, prohibit и ban. Forbid означает 'не давать разрешения на что-л.'; обычно это действие исходит от лиц, пользующихся признанным или официальным авторитетом, например родителей, врачей, начальства и т. д.: запретить ребенку выходить из дома – to forbid a child to leave home, запретить больному вставать с постели – to forbid a patient to leave the bed. Prohibit имеет в виду официальное запрещение: запретить продажу спиртных напитков – to prohibit the sale of liquors.
