10 πλώω
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `to swim', aor. etc. (ep. Ion. Il.) also `to sail, to go by sea' (beside pres. πλέω; on πλώω: πλέω Bechtel Dial. 3, 196ff., 208).Other forms: Aor. πλῶ-ναι ( ἐπ-έπλων etc., Hom., Hes.), πλῶσαι (Γ 47: ptc. ἐπι-πλώσας; Hdt., Arr.), fut. πλώσ-ομαι (Hdt.), -ω (Lyc.), perf. πέπλωκα (Hdt., Lyc.; also E. Hel. 532 and Ar. Th. 878 [parody]),Derivatives: Prob. all derivv. are from Ion. (Fraenkel Nom. ag. 2, 3 f.). Adj. 1. πλω-τός ( πρόσ-, ἔκ-πλώω) `swimming, navigable' (κ 3 [on the explanation Giusti Il. mondo class. 7, 63ff.], Hp., Hdt., Arist.) with - τίς f. approx. `raft' (Demetr. Astrol.), - τεύομαι `to be navigated, cruised' (Plb.); 2. πλω-τικός `seafaring' (hell.); 3. - σιμος `navigable, seaworthy' (S., Diogenian.), rather from πλῶσαι than from *πλῶσις; thus πλώ-ϊμος beside and for πλόϊμος (s. on πλέω w. lit.). Subst. 4. κατάπλω-σις f. `home-coming by sea' (Herod.); 5. πλωτήρ m. `sailor' (rare in E., Ar., Pl., often in Arist. etc.), `swimmer' (Opp., Nonn.); 6. πλω-άδες, -ϊάδες (Thphr.), - ίδες (A. R.) f. pl. `swimming, flowing'; also 7. πλώς, pl. πλῶτες name of a fish, = κεστρεύς, if prop. "swimmer" (cf. Thompson Fishes s. πλῶτα); but δακρυπλώειν (τ 122) not denomin. from *δακρυ-πλώς, but after δάκρυ χέων, χέουσα built as univerbation; cf. Leumann Hom. Wörter 36 w. n. 1 a. lit. 8. Verb: πλω-ΐζω (- ῴζω) `to go by sea' (Hes., Th.) with -ϊσις f. `seafaring' (Just.).Etymology: The above forms are not unambiguous. The aorist ἔπλων ( ἐπ-έπλων, ἀπ-έπλω a. o.) agrees with ἔγνων and so looks most like an athem. root-aorist (ptc. ἐπιπλώς Z 291 false for - πλούς?); to this as innovations ἔπλωσα-(ἔγνων: Skt. ájñāsam) and πλώω (cf. Chantraine Gramm. hom. 1, 365)? Or the other way round (with Schwyzer 743 n.5 [asking]): ἔπλων secondary to older ἔπλωσα and this orig. to πλώω? In the first alternative we have no reason to keep ἔπλων etc. together with πλέω; in the second πλώω from *πλώϜ-ω is taken as lengthened deverbative (e.g. Schwyzer 722 and 349); to this analog. the other forms (cf. Schwyzer 346). The same lengthened grade is found in the Slav. iterative, e.g. OCS plavati, Russ. plávatь `swim (to and fro)'. A correspondent of πλω- however gives Germ. in OWNo. flōa, OE flōwan (w secondary) with Goth. flodus m. ' ποταμός (would be Gr. *πλω-τύς) a. o.; this too can go back on a reduplicated (?) IE * plō[u̯]-. If one decides for original πλω- from IE * plō- (* pleh₃-), this could be in ablaut with πλη- in πίμ-πλη-μι (Brugmann-Thumb 325 a. 327) [I see no reaon for this argumentation; I see no basis for a form * ploh₁-] which fits semantically worse than πλέω with πλώω. Frisk prefers explanation from *πλώϜ-ω. So either from a root * pleh₃-, or from a langthened grade deverbative *plōu̯-. -- Cf. πλέω, also πλύνω.Page in Frisk: 2,565-566Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > πλώω

13 πίμπλημι
πίμπλημι, - αμαιGrammatical information: v.Meaning: `to fill, to make full', intr. `to fill oneself, to become or be full' (Il.).Other forms: - άνεται 3. sg. (I 679), rare - άω, - έω (Hp.), also πλήθω (intr., late also tr.; ep. poet. Il.). Aor. πλῆ-σαι, - σασθαι, - σθῆναι, (Il.), intr. πλῆ-το, - ντο (ep.), ἐν-έπλητο etc. (Att.), fut. πλή-σω, - σομαι (Od.), - σθήσομαι (Att.), perf. midd. πέπλησμαι (IA.), act. πέπληκα (Att.), intr. πέπληθα (poet.).Compounds: Very often w. prefix, e.g. ἀνα-(συν-ανα-, προσ-ανα- a.o.), ἐν- ( ἀντ-εν-, παρ-εν- a.o.). As 1. member in some governing compp., e.g. πλησίστιος `filling the sail' (Od., E.), `with full sails' (Ph., Plu.).Derivatives: 1. πλέως (also w. ἐν-, ἀνα-, ἐκ- a.o. to ἐμ-πίμπλημι etc.), Ion. πλέος, ep. πλεῖος = *πλῆος, ntr. πλέον `full' (Il.). On the comp. πλείων with sup. πλεῖστος s. esp. -- 2. πλή-μη f. `high tide, flood' (Plb., Str. a.o.), - σμη f. `id.' (Hes. Fr. 217), - μα πλήρωμα H., - σμα n. `fertilisation' (Arist.); - σμιος `saturating, causing tedium' (Epicur., medic.); - σμονή f. `fullness, congestion, (over)saturation' (IA.; Schwyzer 524, Chantraine Form. 207) with - σμονώδης (Hp., Gal.), - σμονικός (Pythag. Ep.) `(over)saturating'. On πλήμνη s. v. -- 3. πλή-ρης `full' (IA.); as 1. member e.g. πληρο-φορέω ` fulfill' (Ctes., LXX, NT, pap.); πληρό-της f. `fullness' (Plu.), πληρ-όω, very often w. prefix, e.g. ἀνα-, ἐκ-, ἀπο-, συν-, `to make full, to (ful)fill, to finish, to pay fully' (IA.) with - ωμα ( ἀνα-, συν- a.o.) n. `filling, filling piece, full number, full payment, (full) crew' (IA.), - ωσις ( ἀνα-, ἐκ- u.a.) f. `accomplishment, complement, satisfaction' (IA.; Holt Les noms d'action en - σις 128), - ωτής ( ἐκ-, ἀπο-) m. `finisher, executor, collector' (Att.), - ωτικός ( ἀνα-, συν- a.o.) `fulfilling, completing' (Epicur., medic. a. o.). -- 4. πλῆ-θος n. `fulness, mass (of people), herd' (Il., Dor., Arc.); often as 2. member, e.g. παμ-πληθής `consisting of a whole mass, very numerous' (Att.); -θᾱ f. `id.' (Locr., Boeot.); -θύ̄ς, - θύος f. `id.' (Ion. Cret. Locr. hell.; Bechtel Dial. 2, 791f., also Ruijgh L'élém. ach. 110 against Leumann Hom. Wörter 294 f.) with - θύω `to be full, to become full, increase', - θύνομαι, - θύνω `to belong to the mass, to agree with it, to augment oneself; to make full, to augment' (A., Arist., LXX, NT); from it - θυσμός m. `increase' (Procl., Simp.), - θυντικός `plural' (Gramm. a.o.); 5. πληθ-ώρα, Ion. -η f. `fulness', rnedic. `plethora, full-blooded' (Ion. hell.; on the secondary barytonesis Wackernagel-Debrunner Phil. 95, 181 f.) with - ωριάω `suffer from p.'. - ωρικός `plethoric' (Gal.), - ωρέω `to be full' (Suid.).Etymology: The sigmatic aorist 3. sg. ἔ-πλησ-ε is (except for the -ε) identical with Skt. á-prās: IE *é-pleh₁s-t; with 1. pl. pres. πίμ-πλα-μεν agrees also, setting aside the secondary nasalisation of the present, Skt. pi-pr̥-más: IE *pi-pl̥-mé(s). Also 3. sg. πίμ-πλη-σι has a non-Gr. agreement, in Av. ham-pā-frāi-ti `fills up' over against Skt. pí-par-ti from IE * pi-pel-ti. Both in Greek and in Iran. came in sing. the langvocalic full grade plē- after other forms (e.g. the aor. *é-plēs-) for the prob. older Skt. pí-par-ti. After the pattern of τίθημι: τίθεμεν one made sometimes forms like ptc. pl. f. πιμπλεῖσαι (Hes.: τιθεῖσαι). With πέ-πλη-θ-α cf. still Skt. pa-prā́[u] (on θ below). -- The r-suffix in πλή-ρης (for older *πλη-ρο-ς? Schwyzer 513) is both in Arm. li-r `fullness' (from * plē-r-i-) and in Lat. plē-rus `for the greater part', plērī-que `most' (s. W.-Hofmann s. v.) attested. Also πλέως from *πλῆος (= Hom. πλεῖος), *πλη-(ι)ος can be equated with Arm. li `full' (better then li from * plē-tos = Lat. - plētus a.o.). The m-suffix in πλή-μη, - μα seems also in Lat. plēminābantur replēbantur (Gloss.; from * plēmen = πλῆμα) to be represented. -- Like πλῆ-θος: πλή-θω, πέ-πλη-θα also βρῖ-θος: βρί-θω: βέ-βρι-θα (s. v. and Schwyzer 511 a. 703); with πλῆθος, -θύ̄ς (on which Schwyzer 463f. and Frisk Eranos 43, 221) one compares Lat. plēbēs from IE *plēdhu̯ēs (cf. W.-Hofmann s. v.); well-argued doubts in Ernout-Meillet s. v. -- Further details w. rich lit. in WP. 2, 63f., Pok. 799f., W.-Hofmann s. pleō, Mayrhofer s. píparti1; older lit. also in Bq. On the Greek form still Schwyzer 689. -- Cf. πολύς, πλείων, πλήμνη.Page in Frisk: 2,537-538Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > πίμπλημι

14 πλείων
Grammatical information: adj. (comp.)Meaning: `more, longer, larger' (Hom.).Other forms: πλέων, n. πλεῖον, πλέον (Il.), ep. Aeol. pl. also πλέες, Cret. πλίες etc. (further forms in Seiler Steigerungsformen 113, Schwyzer 537 n. 6; cf. also bel.); superl. πλεῖστος (Il.) `most, the longset, the greatest'.Compounds: As 1. member a.o. in the compound πλεον-εξ-ία f. `greed, benefitl', πλεον-εκτέω with - έκτημα, έκτης, - εκτικός (IA.; from πλέον ἔχειν, cf. εὑεξία a.o. s. 1. ἔχω and Fraenkel Nom. ag. 1, 166); πλειστό-μβροτος `very rich in people' (Pi.).Derivatives: From πλε(ί)ων, πλέον: πλειότης f. `plurality' ( Theol. Ar.), πλειονότης f. `the superior length of the chord' (Nicom. Harm.); πλεον-άκις `more often' (IA.), - αχός, - αχῶς `multiple, in multiple ways' (Arist.), -αχῃ̃ `in more respects' (Pl.); - άζω `to have an abundance, to be excessive, to grow in number, to increase' (IA.) with - ασμός, - ασμα, - ασις (Arist., hell.). Fronm πλεῖστος: πλειστ-άκις `most often, very often' (IA.), - αχόθεν `from the most (very many) places' (Ar.), - ήρης `the most (χρόνος), the longest' (A. Eu. 763), - ηρίζομαι approx. `to appoint someone as the highest authority' (A. Ch. 1029), - ηριάζω `to bid the highest price (in auctions), to outbid' (Lys., Pl. Com., Them.) with - ηριασμός ὑπερθεματισμός H.Etymology: As basis of the above comp. forms one may posit PGr. *πλή-[ι̯]ων, *πλή-ιστος; from there πλέων, πλεῖστος; to πλεῖστος analog. πλείων (cf. also μείων). The seemingly archaic πλέες, πλίες (s. on them Schwyzer 537 n. 6 w. rich lit.) are best taken as innovations to πλέον, pl. πλέα (Leumann Mus. Helv. 2, 1f. = Kl. Schr. 214f.). Unclear Att. πλεῖν = πλέον and Arc. πλος ( πλως?) `plus', s. Schwyzer l.c. (also n. 1) and Leumann l.c. The sporadic attestations with η, e.g. πλῆον (Milete a.e.), Πλήστ-αρχος (Tegea) can hardly be interpreted as testimonies of older situations (s. Seiler l.c.). -- A corresponding comp. gives Av. frāyah- `more, much, many', Skt. adv. prāyaḥ. As the superlative originally had zero grade and a zero grade form. has been supposed in Av. fraēštǝm `mostly', OWNo. fleistr `most' (with comp. fleiri), but it has full grade, IE * pleh₁-isto-? The stem πλη- is best seen in πίμπλημι (s. v.); on the positive πολύς s. v. -- Details in the above mentioned lit. and in WP. 2, 65 (Pok. 798), W.-Hofmann s. plūs, Mayrhofer s. prāyaḥ.Page in Frisk: 2,556Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > πλείων
