Se emplea como locución nominal masculina con el sentido de 'error involuntario que se comete al hablar': "Un lapsus línguae, la inoportuna confusión de una palabra con otra, es con frecuencia muy reveladora de intenciones o preocupaciones reprimidas" (Pinillos Mente [Esp. 1969]). La pronunciación corriente en español del segundo elemento es [língue], en la que el diptongo latino ae se pronuncia como e, rasgo típico del latín vulgar; pero también se pronuncia [línguae], como corresponde a la pronunciación del latín clásico. Ambas son válidas. Es invariable en plural: los lapsus línguae. [RAE: Diccionario panhispánico de dudas. Madrid: Santillana, 2005, p. 390-391]"Lapsus: significa 'falta o equivocación cometida por descuido'. El lapsus linguae es 'tropiezo o error de lengua'.
