Существительное остаток имеет несколько эквивалентов в английском языке: remainder, rest, remnant(s) и remains. Remainder и rest имеют значение 'оставшаяся часть' и часто взаимозаменяются: остаток жизни – the remainder of one's life и the rest of one's life. (Rest с определенным артиклем может также употребляться применительно к людям в значении 'остальные': the rest of the students; прочие слова со значением 'остаток' употребляются только в сочетании с неодушевленными предметами.) Remainder имеет, помимо этого, математическое значение 'остаток – величина, оставшаяся после вычитания или деления': when 10 is divided by 3, the remainder is 1. Remnants и remains могут взаимозаменяться в значении 'остатки': остатки еды – remnants of a meal и remains of a meal; остатки когда-то могущественной армии – remnants of a once powerful army и remains of a once powerful army. (Remains в ряде случаев переводится русским останки: mortal remains 'бренные останки'; they buried Keats' remains in the Protestant cemetery in Rome.) В современном английском языке может употребляться единственное число remnant: остаток сукна – remnant of cloth.
