L’IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) est un organisme international de normalisation rassemblant 365.000 membres individuels dans 150 pays. L’IEEE a pour but de produire des standards dans les domaines suivants: électricité, électronique, ingénierie informatique, technologie biomédicale, télécommunications, etc. Par exemple, l’IEEE institue en 2000 le standard 802.11, un standard de transmission radio régissant la WiFi (wireless fidelity). Ce standard est complété en 2001 par un deuxième standard, le standard 802.16, qui régit la WiMAX (worldwide interoperability for microwave access). L’IEEE est l’auteur de 900 standards en vigueur, et 400 autres en cours de développement. L’IEEE organise aussi 300 conférences de renom et publie le tiers de la documentation technique mondiale pour l’ingénierie électrique et l’informatique. -
