Но на той плантации, что ему продают, апельсины не растут - почва там бесплодная. К большому огорчению жены и дочери (она не хочет расставаться с женихом, который, кстати, и «помог» ее отцу в этой неудачной сделке), Биссонетт увозит семью на машине в Калифорнию. Ночью в кемпинге жена не пускает его в палатку и даже запрещает ему распевать песни с остановившимися неподалеку музыкантами. Наутро путешествие продолжается. После пикника в частном парке, откуда их прогоняют, Биссонетты приезжают на свою землю: это кусок целины, увенчанный развалившейся хибарой. Амелия говорит, что не пробудет здесь ни минуты. Херолд узнает, что на его участок позарились строители ипподрома. Он продает его задорого: в обмен на хорошую апельсиновую плантацию (на этот раз с апельсинами) и увесистую пачку долларов.
