  • 86 κύλιξ

    κύλιξ, - ικος
    Grammatical information: f. (m.)
    Meaning: `(drinking) cup' (posthom.).
Other forms: note κυλίσκη, - ίχνη
Compounds: Some compp., e.g. κυλικ-ήρυτος `scooped with a cup' (Call.), εὑ-κύλικος `with beautiful cups' (AP).
Derivatives: Diminut.: κυλίκιον (Thphr.), κυλίσκη (D. H., Poll., hardly from - ικ-ίσκη Schwyzer 542), - ίσκιον (Poll.); - ίχνη (Alc., Ar.; Chantraine Formation 195); Lat. LW [loanword] culigna (cf. W.-Hofmann s. calix); - ίχνιον (Ar., hell.), - ιχνίς (Achae.); further κυλικ-εῖον `cup-stander' (comp., pap.), - ειος `belonging to a cup' (Poll.), - ώδης 'κ.-like' (sch.).
Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]
Etymology: Agrees but for the stem-vowel with Lat. calix `deep bowl, cup' (from where NHG Kelch etc.), but a variation a\/u is unknown. The word κάλυξ (s.v.) `seed-vessel, husk' is not identical with our word for the same reason. With anlaut sk Umbr. skalçe-ta `ex patera', cf. σκαλλίον κυλίκιον μικρόν, σκαλίς σκαφεῖον H. does not belong here for the same reason (s. v.). (Also not here Skt. kaláśa- m. `jar, pot, dish'.) As with so many names of cups etc. we must reckon with loans. Wrong Pok. 550 f., W.-Hofmann s. calix (also Ernout-Meillet) who consider the word as IE. Connecting IE * (s)kel- is (in spite of NHG Schale a. o.) not convincing. See Fur. 110, 132 with n. 65, who points to κυλί-σκ-η and κυλίχν-ιον etc. with aspiration before the nasal (which is un-Greek and un-IE). So the word is Pre-Greek. - ικ is a typical Pre-Greek suffix (Beekes, Pre-Greek, suffixes); κυλ-ικ- has a typical Pre-greek structure (ib.)

  • 88 λείτωρ

    λείτωρ, - ορος
    Grammatical information: m.
    Compounds: PG [Pre-Greek] [Pre-Greek]
Derivatives: Denomin. λειτορεύω 'be λείτωρ' (Thess. since IIa; also Egypt.?, s. Wilhelm Arch. f. Pap. 9, 214ff.). Details on spread etc. s. E. Kretschmer Glotta 18, 83 f., also Fraenkel Nom. ag. 1, 145, Bechtel Dial. 1, 207f., Benveniste Noms d'ag. 47 n. Cf. also ἀλήτωρ ἱερεύς H; further λετωρ `priest' inscr. Arcadia. The prothetic vowel seems to point to a Pre-Greek word; cf. DELG s.v. λήτωρ.
    Origin: XX [etym. unknown]
Etymology: Because of the form λητῆρες which is ascribed to the northwestern Athamanes and (if correctly explained) Arc. λετορο\<ς\> Thess.-Boeot. λει- seems to stand for PGr. λη- (Att. λείτωρ a loan from Boeot.?). For the same reason the semantically attractive connection with λήϊ-τος, ληΐτη and λῄτη ' ἱέρεια', λειτουργός (s. λαός) makes difficulties; as secondary suffix - τωρ, - τηρ (for - της) is remarkable. Other hypotheses: to λάτρον (L.Meyer, Prellwitz); to λίσσομαι, λιταί (Hoffmann Dial. 2, 328).

  • 98 γάλως

    γάλως,
    Grammatical information: f.
    Meaning: `husband's sister' (Il.)
Other forms: Ep. dat. sg. and nom. pl. γαλόῳ, gen. pl. γαλόων (with metrical diectasis). γάλις γαλαός H. (s. below).
Dialectal forms: Att. (acc. to Hdn. Gr.)
    Origin: IE [Indo-European] [367] *ǵlH-ōu-s `husband's sister'
Etymology: The Greek forms derive from *γαλ-αϜ-ο- (not *γαλ-ωϜ-ο-, Beekes, MSS 34, 1976,13ff), thematization of *ǵlh₂-eu-; this is probably an oblique stem from *ǵ(e)lh₂-ōu-s (formation as in πάτρως, μήτρως, s. vv.). Old genealogical term. Acc. to Hermann Gött. Nachr. 1918, 222f. originally the ummarried sister of the husband. Cf. Lat. glōs `husband's sister' (sec. `brother's wife'); the loss of the laryngeal in Latin is difficult, Schrijver 131. Arm. tal `id.' (i-stem; t- for c- after taygr `husbands brother', s. on δαήρ) and Slavic words, e. g. OCS zъlъva, Russ. zólva, zolóvka \< *-uu̯- (from - uh₂- after the feminines in -ūs?). Sanskrit has giri- `sister-in-law' from *ǵlH-i-. Unclear γέλαρος ἀδελφοῦ γυνή, Φρυγιστί H. (for *γέλαϜος? Hermann l.c.). - Oettinger (in Anreiter a.o., Man and the animal world, 1998, 649-654) points out that in Romance languages and dialects often `weasel' and `aunt' are homonyms, because of the behaviour of the aunt; for the same reason the IE terms could have been identical. The nature of the laryngeal is difficult to determine, unless the Hesychius gloss has *γαλαϜ-ος \< *ǵlh₂-eu-os ( γάλις could be *ǵlH-i-).

  • 99 Ercker, Lazarus

    [br]
    b. c.1530 Annaberg, Saxony, Germany
    d. 1594 Prague, Bohemia
    [br]
    German chemist and metallurgist.
    [br]
Educated at Wittenberg University during 1547–8, Ercker obtained in 1554, through one of his wife's relatives, the post of Assayer from the Elector Augustus at Dresden. From then on he took a succession of posts in mining and metallurgy. In 1555 he was Chief Consultant and Supervisor of all matters relating to mines, but for some unknown reason was demoted to Warden of the Mint at Annaberg. In 1558 he travelled to the Tyrol to study the mines in that region, and in the same year Prince Henry of Brunswick appointed him Warden, then Master, of the Mint at Goslar. Ercker later moved to Prague where, through another of his wife's relatives, he was appointed Control Tester at Kutna Hora. It was there that he wrote his best-known book, Die Beschreibung allfürnemisten mineralischen Ertz, which drew him to the attention of the Emperor Maximilian, who made him Courier for Mining and a clerk of the Supreme Court of Bohemia. The next Emperor, Rudolf II, a noted patron of science and alchemy, promoted Ercker to Chief Inspector of Mines and ennobled him in 1586 with the title Von Schreckenfels'. His second wife managed the mint at Kutna Hora and his two sons became assayers. These appointments gained him much experience of the extraction and refining of metals. This first bore fruit in a book on assaying, Probierbüchlein, printed in 1556, followed by one on minting, Münzbuch, in 1563. His main work, Die Beschreibung, was a systematic review of the methods of obtaining, refining and testing the alloys and minerals of gold, silver, copper, antimony, mercury and lead. The preparation of acids, salts and other compounds is also covered, and his apparatus is fully described and illustrated. Although Ercker used Agricola's De re metattica as a model, his own work was securely based on his practical experience. Die Beschreibung was the first manual of analytical and metallurgical chemistry and influenced later writers such as Glauber on assaying. After the first edition in Prague came four further editions in Frankfurt-am-Main.
