= заквашивание[греч. siros — яма для хранения зерна]ферментация растительной массы, наиболее распространенный способ заготовки сочных кормов. Измельченную массу силосных культур укладывают в силосные хранилища, уплотняют и укрывают. В результате сбраживания сахаров, происходящего в основном под действием бактерий Lactobacillus, в растительной массе накапливаются консерванты — молочная и др. кислоты; обычно силос готов к употреблению через 1—1,5 месяца после начала ферментации.Толковый биотехнологический словарь.
