Ситуация, при которой рост цен на минеральное сырье ( или открытие месторождений минералов, или крупное технологическое нововведение и т.п.), меняя характер сравнительных преимуществ данной страны, ведет к поступлению в страну большого количества иностранной валюты (обычно — долларовой выручки за нефть) и следовательно, к удорожанию национальной валюты. (См. Валютный курс). А это в свою очередь, угнетает традиционный экспорт. Например, когда Голландия обнаружила нефть в Северном море, экспорт голландских тюльпанов резко упал, а безработица в данном и смежных секторах выросла — отсюда и название.
