    A plain weave cotton cloth usually in cream shades and raised face finish, and used for sportswear, tennis, boating, etc. It is made in various widths, 33-in., 45-in. and 54-in. and about 54 ends and 60 picks per inch, 32's T., 16's W. It is a very good quality flannelette.

  • 23 Macintosh Cloth

    A fabric that was named after the inventor. It was produced by cementing together two layers of fine cotton fabric with a solution of caoutchouc in coal naptha, or liquid rubber. The fabrics and the solution are permanently pressed together through wood rollers and the cloth is then thoroughly dried. It is made up into outer garments, aprons, etc., which resist rough wear and are weather and moisture proof.

  • 24 Palm Beach Cloth

    A wool fabric originally made for wear as suitings, dresses, etc., at Palm Beach, U.S.A. Plain weave, from light coloured yarn dyed wools, in 26-in. widths, 48 ends and 48 picks per inch, 40's worsted warp and weft. They are now also made with two-fold or single cotton warp and about 40/58 picks per inch, in both plain colours and stripes. The weft is either mohair or hard wool. A popular cloth is made 2 white 2 grey ends, in the warp of 2/32's cotton, and 24's lustre weft, 34 ends and 42 picks per inch. An all-cotton imitation is made, but is a very poor substitute.

  • 25 Peruvian Cloth

    A cloth much used for table covers. About 66-in. to 72-in. wide, made from heavy linen yarns dyed in dark shades of red, blue, brown, etc. Woven plain, but embroidered afterwards. Of Peruvian manufacture.

    Cloth in which every warp thread passes alternately over and under successive picks of weft, and in which adjacent threads weave exactly contrary to each other, viz., when odd ends are up, even ends are down, and vice versa. Chiffons, georgettes, crepe-de-Chines, taffetas, some poplins, etc., are plain weave styles.

  • 27 Tissue Figured Cloth

    Very fine muslins used for curtains, etc., which have large jacquard designs produced by extra weft. The ground cloth is plain open weave muslin made from fine warp and weft. Thick figuring weft interweaves with the ground warp only where required for pattern, and otherwise floats loosely on the back and is afterwards cropped off.

    A jute or coarse linen fabric used for such purposes as wind screens, ventilation, etc. in mines. Usually treated to make it rot- and fire-proof. Plain or 2 X 1 twill weave. Very coarse yarns are used in a low count of reed and pick. The better qualities are made double ends.

    A brocaded fabric, satin ground, woven from tinsel warp and tram silk weft. Other qualities have cotton or rayon weft. Used for dance frocks, shoes, furnishing, etc. Often the tinsel is used as weft as well as warp.

  • 35 Mienchow Cloth

    Various silk fabrics made in China. One variety made in Fuchow and Kaichow, Northern China, from mulberry silk, in pieces 17-in. wide and 22 yards long, is used principally for underclothing. In Huchow a fabric is made from waste silk and given this term. After weaving, the fabric is boiled-out and dyed blue, violet, scarlet, etc. This is also used for underclothing. Another variety is made in the Kiangsu Province from waste silk warp and cotton weft. They are all plain weave fabrics and in many qualities of reed, pick and weights.
