1 Cloak
Under one name or another, this familiar garment has existed in nearly all countries from early biblical periods. The earliest English records are that cloaks were worn in the 8th century. The term used then was mentel from whence our word " mantle." The early garment was made of fine wool, dyed in several colours, woven in stripes or checks. Cloaks were made of velvet, taffeta and other materials. Some cloaks were short, some long, some trailing, and styles were numerous. In some cases they were faced with lace, gold and silk. -
