  • 83 make up one's mind

Back in 1938 I started to study nuclear physics. Torn between two loves, science and literature, I could not make up my mind which field to choose. (R. E. Lapp, ‘Atoms and People’, ch.

‘But I oughtn't to conceal from you that I don't feel inclined to accept the Master's kind invitation.’ ‘Don't make up your mind yet.’ ‘I'm very much afraid it is made up,’ said Jago.

My mind is made up, and that's all there is to it. (E. Caldwell, ‘Jackpot’, ‘The People vs. Abe Lathan, Colored’) —

    2) (to smth.)

After Julia had made up her mind to that she was glad. (W. S. Maugham, ‘Theatre’, ch. XXIII) —

The Maiden: "It is not the ageing that is so rapid. It is the realization of it when it has actually happened. Now that I have made up my mind to the fact that I have left childhood behind me, it comes home to me in leaps and bounds with every word you say." (B. Shaw, ‘Back to Methuselah’, part V) — Дева: "Не так быстро взрослеешь, как осознаешь, что стал взрослым. я уже свыклась с мыслью, что детство позади, но каждое наше слово будит воспоминания об ушедшей поре."

  • 84 Faraday, Michael

    SUBJECT AREA: Electricity
    [br]
    b. 22 September 1791 Newington, Surrey, England
    d. 25 August 1867 London, England
    [br]
English physicist, discoverer of the principles of the electric motor and dynamo.
    [br]
Faraday's father was a blacksmith recently moved south from Westmorland. The young Faraday's formal education was limited to attendance at "a Common Day School", and then he worked as an errand boy for George Riebau, a bookseller and bookbinder in London's West End. Riebau subsequently took him as an apprentice bookbinder, and Faraday seized every opportunity to read the books that came his way, especially scientific works.
A customer in the shop gave Faraday tickets to hear Sir Humphry Davy lecturing at the Royal Institution. He made notes of the lectures, bound them and sent them to Davy, asking for scientific employment. When a vacancy arose for a laboratory assistant at the Royal Institution, Davy remembered Faraday, who he took as his assistant on an 18- month tour of France, Italy and Switzerland (despite the fact that Britain and France were at war!). The tour, and especially Davy's constant company and readiness to explain matters, was a scientific education for Faraday, who returned to the Royal Institution as a competent chemist in his own right. Faraday was interested in electricity, which was then viewed as a branch of chemistry. After Oersted's announcement in 1820 that an electric current could affect a magnet, Faraday devised an arrangement in 1821 for producing continuous motion from an electric current and a magnet. This was the basis of the electric motor. Ten years later, after much thought and experiment, he achieved the converse of Oersted's effect, the production of an electric current from a magnet. This was magneto-electric induction, the basis of the electric generator.
Electrical engineers usually regard Faraday as the "father" of their profession, but Faraday himself was not primarily interested in the practical applications of his discoveries. His driving motivation was to understand the forces of nature, such as electricity and magnetism, and the relationship between them. Faraday delighted in telling others about science, and studied what made a good scientific lecturer. At the Royal Institution he introduced the Friday Evening Discourses and also the Christmas Lectures for Young People, now televised in the UK every Christmas.

  • 85 Pihl, Carl Abraham

    [br]
    b. 16 January 1825 Stavanger, Norway
    d. 14 September 1897 Kristiania (now Oslo), Norway
    [br]
Norwegian railway engineer, protagonist of narrow-gauge railways.
    [br]
Pihl trained as an engineer at Göteborg, Sweden, and then moved to London, where he worked under Robert Stephenson during 1845 and 1846. In 1850 he returned to Norway and worked with the English contractors building the first railway in Norway, the Norwegian Trunk Railway from Kristiania to Eidsvold, for which the English standard gauge was used. Subsequently he worked in England for a year, but in 1856 joined the Norwegian government's Road Department, which was to have responsibility for railways. In 1865 a distinct Railway Department was set up, and Pihl became Director for State Railway Construction. Because of the difficulties of the terrain and limited traffic, Pihl recommended that in the case of two isolated lines to be built the outlay involved in ordinary railways would not be justified, and that they should be built to the narrow gauge of 3 ft 6 in. (1.07 m). His recommendation was accepted by the Government in 1857 and the two lines were built to this gauge and opened during 1861–4. Six of their seven locomotives, and all their rolling stock, were imported from Britain. The lines cost £3,000 and £5,000 per mile, respectively; a standard-gauge line built in the same period cost £6,400 per mile.
Subsequently, many hundreds of miles of Norwegian railways were built to 3 ft 6 in. (1.07 m) gauge under Pihl's direction. They influenced construction of railways to this gauge in Australia, Southern Africa, New Zealand, Japan and elsewhere. However, in the late 1870s controversy arose in Norway over the economies that could in fact be gained from the 3 ft 6 in. (1,07 m) gauge. This controversy in the press, in discussion and in the Norwegian parliament became increasingly acrimonious during the next two decades; the standard-gauge party may be said to have won with the decision in 1898, the year after Pihl's death, to build the Bergen-Oslo line to standard gauge.

  • 86 Ransome, Robert

    [br]
    b. 1753 Wells, Norfolk, England
    d. 1830 England
    [br]
English inventor of a self-sharpening ploughshare and all-metal ploughs with interchangeable pans.
    [br]
The son of a Quaker schoolmaster, Ransome served his apprenticeship with a Norfolk iron manufacturer and then went into business on his own in the same town, setting up one of the first brass and iron foundries in East Anglia. At an early stage of his career he was selling into Norfolk and Suffolk, well beyond the boundaries to be expected from a local craftsman. He achieved this through the use of forty-seven agents acting on his behalf. In 1789, with one employee and £200 capital, he transferred to Ipswich, where the company was to remain and where there was easier access to both raw materials and his markets. It was there that he discovered that cooling one part of a metal share during its casting could result in a self-sharpening share, and he patented the process in 1785.
Ransome won a number of awards at the early Bath and West shows, a fact which demonstrates the extent of his markets. In 1808 he patented an all-metal plough made up of interchangeable parts, and the following year was making complete ploughs for sale. With interchangeable parts he was able to make composite ploughs suitable for a wide variety of conditions and therefore with potential markets all over the country.
In 1815 he was joined by his son James, and at about the same time by William Cubitt. With the expertise of the latter the firm moved into bridge building and millwrighting, and was therefore able to withstand the agricultural depression which began to affect other manufacturers from about 1815. In 1818, under Cubitt's direction, Ransome built the gas-supply system for the town of Ipswich. In 1830 his grandson James Ransome joined the firm, and it was under his influence that the agricultural side was developed. There was a great expansion in the business after 1835.

  • 87 Fátima

Village in central Portugal, site of a Catholic shrine and pilgrimage center, and place associated with the cult of Our Lady of Fátima. Near this small village in the so-called "Cove of the Lions," the Virgin Mary reportedly appeared before three peasant children, on the 13th of each month, from May to October 1917. The children were told that they were being addressed by Our Lady of the Rosary, and that a chapel should be built there in her honor. Fátima soon became, in effect, the Portuguese Lourdes, one of the great Catholic shrines and pilgrimage centers. In 1932, the Catholic Church authorized devotion to Our Lady of Fátima, and a large shrine and basilica were constructed near the site of the incidents. In 1967, Pope Paul VI visited Fátima. Fátima has become a center of devotion for millions of persons in recent decades, as well as the topic of a continuing controversy between believers and skeptics and critics. Debates about the significance of what happened at Fátima in 1917 and the aftermath will continue, but it is a fact that the development of Fátima as a Catholic shrine and pilgrimage center occurred amidst a Catholic revival in Portugal during the first third of the 20th century.

  • 88 going forward

•• The cost base adjustment made by London-listed specialist banker Investec last year is paying off and the group is a lot more confident going forward, CEO Stephen Koseff said on Monday.
•• Going forward, the Party as well as the government and the nongovernmental community, must take those steps which are possible within existing resources, to promote a culture of production.
•• Going forward is a relatively new and apparently convenient way to indicate a progression in time from the present. The term suggests a continuing and progressive movement rather than, as in the futurecan sometimes mean, some specific future date. Like many such expressions, it means enough to be useful while also being suitably vague. The term is widely used in annual reports and other corporate statements and, like such terms as venue and cautionary tale, seems to have been readily adopted by news media writers. The term has become increasingly popular in press releases from Internet start-ups and newly public companies.
•• In information technology, vanilla (pronounced vah-NIHL-uh) is an adjective meaning plain or basic. The unfeatured version of a product is sometimes referred to as the vanilla version.
•• The term is based on the fact that vanilla is the most popular or at least the most commonly served flavor of ice cream. Or, as Eric Raymond, editor of The New Hacker’s Dictionary, puts it, the default ice cream.
•• Going forwardalso has a longer-standing usage as the starting, continuing, or resumption of activity on something that has been planned previously, such as an engineering project or a summit conference.
CNN.com:
•• Justice going forward with probe into leak of CIA name.
•• The term going forwardin relation to the time in which any particular solution is to be implemented irks me to no end.
•• Близко к going forward выражение down the road, которое тоже любят бизнесмены и журналисты, пишущие о бизнесе. International Herald Tribune:
•• Severstal management owns roughly 83 percent of the company’s stock, <...> and that concentration of ownership in management’s hands could present a risk for minority investors down the road.

It became evident that Redwood had still imperfectly apprehended the fact that an iron curtain had dropped between him and the outer world. (H. G. Wells, ‘The Food of the Gods’, book III, ch.

Yesterday Mr. Goodwyn, the Associate Warden, informed me that my letters have contained editorial comments and "directives" on national and foreign affairs and that this is contrary to Federal Bureau of Prisons regulations... I'm incensed and if I should write further I might jeopardize my efforts to break through the Iron Curtain here. IMC

    -

Intermediate metal conduit, or IMC for short, is a rigid steel electrical conduit that is lighter in weight than another rigid conduit. It was designed specifically to protect insulated electrical conductors and cables. It does the work of a similar conduit, galvanized rigid conduit (GRC), but with much less weight and thickness size. By utilizing IMC in areas allowed, you can all but eliminate the need for a heavier wall conduit.

IMC has other advantages over GRC. It has a larger interior diameter than Galvanized Rigid Conduit and the smoother interior of the pipe allows for easier wire pulling through the conduit.

IMC was originally introduced by Allied Tube & Conduit Corporation. It is manufactured in accordance with Underwriters’ Laboratories safety standard 1242 and ANSI C80.6. Believe it or not, Allied claims that IMC is actually more rigid than GRC in applications such as service masts and other installations. It has been installed in industrial and commercial buildings. In fact, the National Electrical Code has a specific article about IMC, article 342.

IMC conduit is coated in a hot galvanized coating on the exterior and a special corrosive-resistant coating on the inside to extend the conduit’s lifespan for reliability. Common conduit sizes range from ½” to 4”.

    IMC

[Association has to be] given up as a special and independent theoretical concept. • 100 Allen, John F.

    [br]
    b. 1829 England
    d. 2 October 1900 New York (?), USA
    [br]
English inventor of the Allen valve used on his pioneering high-speed engines.
    [br]
Allen was taken to the United States from England when he was 12 years old. He became an engineer on the Curlew, a freight boat running between New York and Providence. A defect which caused the engine to race in rough weather led Allen to invent a new valve gear, but he found it could not be fitted to the Corliss engine. In 1856 he patented an improved form of valve and operating gear to reduce back-pressure in the cylinder, which was in fact the reverse of what happened in his later engines. In 1860 he repaired the engines of a New York felt-hat manufacturer, Henry Burr, and that winter he was introduced to Charles Porter. Porter realized the potential of Allen's valves for his idea of a high-speed engine, and the Porter-Allen engine became the pioneer of high-speed designs.
Porter persuaded Allen to patent his new valves and two patents were obtained in 1862. These valves could be driven positively and yet the travel of the inlet could be varied to give the maximum expansion at different cut-offs. Also, the valves allowed an exceptionally good flow of steam. While Porter went to England and tried to interest manufacturers there, Allen remained in America and continued work on the engine. Within a few years he invented an inclined watertube boiler, but he seemed incapable of furthering his inventions once they had been placed on the market. Although he mortgaged his own house in order to help finance the factory for building the steam engine, in the early 1870s he left Porter and built a workshop of his own at Mott Haven. There he invented important systems for riveting by pneumatic machines through both percussion and pressure which led into the production of air compressors and riveting machines.
