κνήθω (Aristot.; Herodas 4, 51 et al.=‘scratch’; acc. to Moeris p. 234 H. Gk., not Att. There is an older form κνάω which, as ἐπικνάω, is found as early as Il. 11, 639. The aor. mid. is found in Lucian, Bis Accusatus 1 οὐδʼ ὅσσον κνήσασθαι τὸ οὖς σχολὴν διάγων=he does not even have enough time to scratch his ear) itch pass. w. act. sense feel an itching κνηθόμενοι τὴν ἀκοήν (s. ἀκοή 3). Fig. of curiosity, that looks for interesting and juicy bits of information. This itching is relieved by the messages of the new teachers. W. the same components as a background, one might transl.: to have one’s ear tickled (a κνῆσις ὤτων takes place τρυφῆς ἕνεκα: Plut., Mor. 167b) 2 Ti 4:3 (s. Clem. Al., Strom.
