2 κίνδαξ
Grammatical information: adj.Derivatives: κινδαύει ( κινδάνει Taillardat, s. u.) κινεῖται, κερατίζει H., Κίνδων name of an ὀψοφάγος (Ath. 8, 345c).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: In κινδ- one assumes a derivation from κίω; cf. for the formation ἀλίνδω, κυλίνδω (Persson Beitr. 1, 156). One has also assumed a nasalinfixed κι-ν-δ- as in Lat. fu-n-d-ō ; (Brugmann IF 6, 94 assumed, not convincingly, nasal-less κι-δ-, in Goth. haitan `name, call'. S. Taillardat Rev. ét. anc. 58, 189ff. with further hypotheses; cf. also Fraenkel Nom. ag. 2, 175 n. 1. Cf. κίνδυνος.- Fur. 291 compares σκίναξ, so the word is Pre-Greek; the word shows beautifully that some forms may closely resemble inherited material. For the variation νδ\/ν cf. Kuiper FS Kretchmer 1956, 216, e.g. ἀθήρ \/ ἀνθέριξ, κίδαφος \/ κινδάφη.Page in Frisk: 1,854Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > κίνδαξ

6 κίνδυνος
Grammatical information: m.Compounds: as 2. member e. g. in ἐπι-κίνδυνος `connected with danger' (IA.).Derivatives: κινδυνώδης `dangerous' (Hp., Plb.), κινδυνεύω `take (the) risk' (IA.) with κινδύνευμα `risk' (S., E., Pl.), - ευτής `dare-devil' (Th., D. C.; cf. Fraenkel Nom. ag. 2, 73), - ευτικός `dangerous, adventurous' (Arist.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: No etymology. The formally attractive connection with κίνδαξ, ὀνο-κίνδιος (which does not belong to κινεῖν! s.s.v.) from Prellwitz Wb., Vendryes REGr. 25, 461f., who compare further Lat. solli-citus `be in danger') gives semantically only one theoretical possibility. Hypothetical is also the proposal by Schulzes (in Sittig KZ 52, 207f.; agreeing a. o. Schwyzer 335, Specht KZ 66, 5), that κίνδυνος is an old expression of the game of dices with assimilation for *κύν-δυ-νος, from κύων as designation of an unsuccesful throw (as Skt. śvan-, Lat. canis; cf. on Κανδαύλης) and a word for `dice, -game' in Skt. dī́vyati `dice', dyūtá- n. `-game'; both phonetically and morphologically doubtfull, s. Kretschmer KZ 55, 90f.; rejected by Kuiper Μνήμης χάριν 1, 217 n. 26. S. also Taillardat, REAnc. 1956, 189-194. For foreign (Pre-Greek or (=) Anatolian) origin Debrunner Eberts Reallexikon 526, Kretschmer l. c. - On κίνδυνος = ἡ ἐν πρῴρα σελίς (H.), from where NGr. (Naxos) `bed', Andriotis Glotta 25, 19f. - Kuiper, GS Kretschmer. 1956, 217 gives κίνδῡν (Alc., Sapph.) as a true ending of a Pre-Greek word (not in Fur.).Page in Frisk: 1,854-855Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > κίνδυνος

7 κίω
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `set (oneself) in movement, (move)away' (Hom., A.), wiht θ-enlargement μετ-εκίαθε, - ον `followed after, visited' (Il.; ῑ metr. lengthening).Other forms: κίεις A. Ch. 680, further only preterite and non-indicative forms: ἔκιε ( κίε), κίομεν, κίον, ipv. κίε, subj. κίῃς, opt. κίοι, ptc. κιώνEtymology: Orig. thematic root-aorist, which was interpreted as imperfect and got incidental present-forms (Schwyzer 747 and 686, Chantraine Gramm. hom. 1, 392f.; diff. Bloch Suppl. Verba 26ff.). - Beside the old root-aorist κί-ε Latin has an old primary to-deriv. in cĭ-tus `quick', prop. *`put in movement' (con-cĭtus, solli-cĭtus a. o.). As present served im Greek κίνυμαι, κινέω (s. v.), which however was in close connection with σεύω (s. v.). In Latin the innovation ciēre (secondary ( ac)- cīre) functioned as present. A "heavy basis" is supposed in μετ-εκίαθε and κίατο ἐκινεῖτο H.; to κια- (* kih₂-e-) the longvocalic κί̄-νυ-μαι could function as zero grade. - (Not here κίνδαξ s.v.) Cf. Strunk, Nasalpräsentien 88, 100, 114. W.-Hofmann s. cieō, Pok. 538f.Page in Frisk: 1,862-863Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > κίω

σκίναξ, - ᾰκοςGrammatical information: m.Meaning: Des. resp. adjunct of the hare, λαγωός (Nic.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Unexplained. Often compared wit κίνδαξ (s. v.); so for *κίναξ with hypercorrect σκ- to κινέω, κίνυμαι? -- Prob. Pre-Greek; it may have nasalised (δ \> ν) beside a prenasalised δ (= νδ); note - ακ-.
