118 Broken Ends
A weaving fault caused by threads of warp breaking while in the loom. This is a serious defect when the cloth has a pattern or when coloured ends are used. -
119 Cover
By " cover of cloth " is meant the full uniform appearance that all plain goods should have, in which all ends and picks are spread equidistant from each other. A well-covered cloth is the opposite to a " reedy " cloth, which shows the ends in pairs. A reedy cloth when bad is often called " grinny." A reedy cloth can be caused by careless weaving, a fault that can be stopped if the loom is properly set. " Reediness " is most difficult to remove when the cloth has insufficient ends to spread out evenly. -
120 Crackers
This term is given to small bunches of short or broken fibres tightly twisted so as to form a short thick place in cotton yarn. When pulled between the finger and thumb a crackle is noticed as rupture of the twisted bunch takes place. Crackers are not often found in mule yarn as the carriage drafting would cause a break before formation. Crackers are rather a serious yarn fault and they may be only discovered when they reach the reed in the loom.
