Напряжение в материале обычно меньшее, чем максимальное напряжение, при котором увеличение деформации происходит без увеличения напряжения. Предел текучести проявляют только некоторые материалы. Если имеется уменьшение в напряжении после того, как площадка текучести достигнута, следует различать верхний и нижний пределы текучести. Нагрузка, при которой происходит внезапное падение кривой текучести, названа верхним пределом текучести, постоянная нагрузка, показанная на кривой текучести — нижний предел текучести.
